Without diverting the thread of Steve Chapman's current enquiry, I'd like to make a separate (although related) enquiry. 

I'm also intent on getting a rotary for bonnetting/scrubbing.  I certainly appreciate the weight consideration and efficiency effects, but like some mid-lifers my back isn't my strongest supporter, so bulk is an issue !  I've considered the LoLine which I believe weighs in at about 18 kg. 

Now the oscillating pad (OP) machines are marketed on their ability not to introduce swirl marks, but hey, can't these indents be easily and completely removed by post-clean grooming ?  Or, is there a potentially damaging effect apparent with the rotary (not OP) that we should be particularly aware of ?

It's important not let them run dry or concentrate them in one position so heat can be generated and distort pile. Under normal use the constant movement left to right should negate this. Pre-spray and rotatry cleaning go hand in hand for me and have been very effective. Bonnet cleaning or LM cleaning is the same if you don't dwell it should be fine. Oh and care should taken with heat set twist piles.

My own rule of thumb for rotaries is not to use them on domestic grade carpets.

Don't clean with any detergent free product on wool. Detregents act as lubricants to minimise the potential for pile damage. I find microsplitters offer about the same lubrication as water, so it is easyish to scorch polypropylene.

Woolsafe do not advise generic bonnet cleaning on wool.

As arena said, don't allow to run dry or keep machine working too long in one area.

Systems such as Dry Fusion and Texatherm have unique detergents which minimise the risk on wool, but care should still be taken.

Rotary swirl marks can easily be permanent damage.
