how easy is chewy removal and how do you charge it?  per sq metre?  i have got some off with cold pressure but i need hot to get it off flags etc?  it will just blast off tarmac with cold water as the hot water would melt the tarmac.  how do you guys get it off tarmac and how easy is the service.

been to look at the job and its chewy on flags, around the main entrance and along a bit of pavement.  can i just hire a hot washer, generator etc?  also do you guys take enough water or do you try to hook up to a supply on site?

the last gum job i did i used hot wash with my whrilaway them spot blasted what didnt come off. i took water how much do you think you will nedd with the water

will need more than 1000 litres of water and there are 3 entrances to quote, need to clean the flags not just the gum .  might do 1 entrance a day if i get job, will need to cordon all area off or close entrance for the day to get it done.

mark, how much pressure hose did you get with the hot washer from slaters? a good length>?  does it get the gum off good?  did you find the whirlaway got some off or did you use spray fan jet?

i think they can close a entrance while i do each one.  was told steam machines take ages to do big areas with gum on,  hot washer is quicker? besides i need to clean the flags anyway with whirlaway?

i would definately take your own water as having pipes trailing to taps etc isnt a good idea, if you are hiring a run of the mill electric hotwash and generator then you will find it probably will not be powerful enough to run your whirlaway so you will have to do the cleaning part with your cold machine, also if hiring a hotwash make sure that the pressure is variable as using full blast on tarmac can easily damage the surface.
 if you start to get a number of these types of jobs then it is advisable to buy a standpipe and license this way you can fill a 1000ltr tank in under five minutes so you dont waste a lot of time waiting for slow water supply to fill tanks.

Good reply from Trevor but I need to add that if you go down the route of tapping into the water supply then you are breaking the law if you don't have a permit to use water ( from a standpipe).

We have just had a standpipe license for some works in Islington, a month of use cost £120.00, they can and do come out and check your kit and if you damage the standpipe you are liable.

If you do use standpipes and do not have a license the fine if and when caught is £20000. Cost the water usage into the job.

 with our standpipe it has a built in metre and every three months we ring the metre reading into the water board and they then send a bill, cant remember exactly but i think the licence is about £400 and then charged about £1.20 per 1000ltr so well worth having if using regularly

We also spoke about this on the phone, and as Trevor & Rob have stated worth getting a stand-pipe and licence, down here we are under three valleys and thames water and you can get a licence per job.

rog have you ever used a dry riser fire hydrant?  the job has a fire tap in a box to connect a fire hose to>?

You don't use a dry riser, they are dry and usually empty pipies, fire brigade use only.
