treading on toes
« on: January 24, 2009, 08:00:53 pm »
My father in laws window cleaner apparently is very hit and miss.
According to him, he hasnt seen him in months.
i know he's a well established w/c, however im thinking im going to offer my services around that area.
I dont really want to tread on anyones toes, and im fairly confident il get the work coz im a well known face already.
I do feel abit awkward however that im planning to pinch this chaps work.
make me feel better guys haha :D

I think im abit worried he's obviously gonna learn about me and watch my various inevitable screw ups.
But i got to start somewhere i guess.
Im hoping the guys so busy that he cant really keep up so aint really that bothered he's lost a few in the area.
He wont lose them all coz-well you know old people, they usually stick to what they know, so our paths will cross... until folk realize im far better looking and choose me over him ;D

If he's unreliable and you are it's a no brainer isn't it??

So long as you get the work with your own prices and don't deliberately under cut him you've done nothing wrong; though I'm not sure you've really done anything wrong if you did deliberately undercut him to be honest.

If he's a good window cleaner who turns up on time (as much as humanly possible) and isn't ripping off his customers you wont be able to take his work as nobody will want to change for the sake of it. If he's not so popular take the work and count the pennies; you're a business after all!!!
Come and talk dirty to us!!!

Personally id ask how much he was charging and if they said £10 id charge £11 or £12 as theyd be happy to pay this for someone reliable, just say his prices seem low maybe thats why he doesnt return as often, if he questions you you can tell him you charge more and its a regular service they want.

if your serious about this, why dont you contact the guy and ask him

if he has any work, that he wants to sell, or pass your way.

this will put you in good stead with him then, a bit of goodwill goes a long way ;)

yes i could do... but iv got to be honest, iv never seen the man!
i know he drove past the other day coz my father in law was swearing and cursing him for not turning up for months.
So if i see him before i go advertising myself, i will ask.
If i dont, then i shall have to take a deep breath and just upset him.
Now another question...
Im obviously not an experienced W/C i only do my own at the moment, would it not be a rip off to charge more or the equivalent to this experienced W/C?
I by no means suck at the trad task, and i will get better at it and faster im sure.
I just dont want to rip people off, esp as our economy is the way it is.
I have set myself a min of £5 and wont go below it as it just wont pay.
But at the same time, i do want to build a decent round over the next few months, and people just cant pay what they were even last year.
You guys are full of answers so i look forward to your advice

No wonder he don't come round anymore if that's what he has to put up with :o
