suede - or not?
« on: March 18, 2005, 03:31:04 pm »
Hi All

Need a little help, got a call from a leaflet drop to have a look at a 'suede' suite.

Got there, had a look.. did shrinkage test, no problem.

did burn test, looked synthetic so I thought no problem.

cleaned a small area with m/s no 2, about 3" square and dried with hair dryer - no problem.

Cut a strip of fabric from the sample under the cusions for testing later, just to confirm and as I always do.

I have just tested it, the surface fabric cools hard on the burn test but the sub-fabric that it appears to be stuck to gives a grey ash!!!

I remember the label saying something like contact Chem dry for professional cleaning, I also remember reading that it had 'buffalo' on the label.

Is this still wet cleanable?  what is the buffalo reference to as it obviously isn't the real thing....is it!

Got to do the job on Tuesday so any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the advise, can you explain a little more, is it the buffalo or the suede?

Chris,

'Buffalo' is most definitely NOT suede and can be cleaned as with any wet cleanable fabric.

I have found wiping with a towell afterwards finishes it off nicely.

One thing to watch out for is any evidence of delamination or bubbling.

Also as with all synthetics , don't go too hot.

I have cleaned over 50 of these with no probs but they are hard work.

Good luck,

Doug

And don't use any solvents on it and when you towel off don' rub too hard.

I believe Bufffalo is a brand name.
I have wet clean this fabric without problems, but it is not a nice experience. Throughout the job you will question whether you are doing the right thing to wet clean it or not.
Use minimum water and dry with a blower not forgetting to set the pile as you go along.
Cleans up lovely.
