Hi everyone

Im ready to take the plunge now and buy a van after having experience with wfp and getting my driving license , with the pass plus scheme too.

What concerns me is that, whilst wanting a smaller van like the connect, is it worth pushing a vehicle like that to its limit in terms of payload. I really dont fancy a larger van and would like to see how other people have faired with a 650 tank, poles + extras etc, if at all.

I think the only one that would fit a tank of that size is the long wheel base, I think NWH had one.

Personally I would either get a bigger van for a tank that size as it would leave no room in it.
or get a smaller tank say a 400l

I would't even think about putting a 650 into a Connect.

They are a decent van but the load area is very small.
A 500 litre standard tank will fit but even then there is very little room left for anything else.

Liike Ian says a bigger van would be your best bet. Something transit size is very workable.

I have a budget of about £3000 and will probably go to an auction with a mechanic.

I've tried smaller vans, and had nothing but problems with both the weight issue and the practicality of it. I'd recommend scudo size MINIMUM,.. preferably Ducato/boxer size to anyone going wfp.

You won't get a new Scudo with a payload of 1200kg for £3000.00. The old JTD scudo has a payload of 900kgs, exactly the same as the LWB Transit Connect. See Andrews comments.

The old Pug Boxers have up to a 1525kg gross payload,.. you'll pick up one for the same price as an expert/scudo of a similar age & mileage,...

I have a Ford Connect with a 400 litre upright tank fitted and as previous posters have pointed out doesn't leave much room for much else. I have a reel, a backpack/trolly 11 litre Di cannister and 3 poles. and 2 jerry cans. Theres no room for nothing else.

If that is in a connect fill it up and take it to a weighbridge. If it is the lwb with 900kg payload it hopefully will be just inside the limit. Looks neat though and good idea not to have clear tank to prevent build up of algae.

Try explaining that to police if they pull you over on the way to work.

Happened to me but I had van previously weighed on a weighbridge and showed the policeman the figures (I was only just inside limit with a 600l tank in a dispatch with a 900kg payload). Otherwise they were going to escort me to the nearest weighbridge.

Only reason I was stopped is he saw the van sitting very low on the axle as I drove past (traffic cop).

They look a very neat van but I guarantee you will be well over the payload with all that on board.

Personally I would not like to risk it. If you were in an accident it could invalidate your insurance and make you personally liable to meet all costs and damages. Could run into tens of thousands if you were judged liable for personal injury or loss of life.

I know of a Peugeot Expert for sale,within your budget, not new obviously, but been used for WFP window cleaning, great runner, good condition and a good work horse. Have someone looking at it 2morrow, if you are interested let me know on here

I've got a lwb connect and use an upright 400lt tank. This has a welded frame at the bottom and a strap across the width fastened to re-enforced steel loops either side. This allows me to place the tank up against the bulkhead (if you have one fitted) and have plenty of room left for hoses, pressure washers etc. The only draw back compared to a larger van ie transit is I fill my tank every evening instead of every other day but my costs for hp, fuel and diesel are way down.
