White sofa cleaning
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:08:58 pm »
Hi ,

We cleaned a 3 seater white sofa 3 weeks ago, they call me today and said that now the sofa is a bit yellow and they try to clean the sofa  cushions covers on the washing machine and they are white again?
Anyone knows the best way to get back the rest of the sofa to the white colour.
Why did the sofa get this yellow colour?

Thanks

You have to be very careful with White upholstery, especially if its Cotton. You are best off cleaning with a suitable specific Cotton cleaner which is acidic and prevents browning problems.
You could try the Oxy-Buff or Browning prescription. Both or either should rectify it. Try and dry it quickly afterwards.

Haitian cotton cleaner from Chemspec would also be good.

Don't listen to Derek and don't just use water. It is the water that has caused the problem. You need an acidic rinse or detergent to clean it again.

JK is right but I personally think a pre treatment with a long dwell really brushing it in so as to work to its optimum level and then a dry vac off and then a light water only rinse with turbo driers aiding drying.

Derek. We have a ccompany up here who use Daz and Persil. Non of the suppliers will entertain them and they have ruined loads of carpets and suites. Don't go there ;)

The browning is caused by slow and uneven drying. Putting stuff in the washing and then drying either by hanging up or over radiators is how she got it out. That might not work on cushions where some of the moisture inevitively absorbs into the inter layer and even the foam meaning the surface fibre can take a while to dry out fully.

Derek
dont forget that Daz, Persil, etc have "bleaching" agents in them, that is why they bought out Daz COLOUR, Persil COLOUR.
If she has washed them in a Biological washing powder, because they are white,
when he has cleaned them as John and Shaun suggested there still could be a colour difference because they are "bleached"

Daryl, you are quite right and I have seen it many times when they have been washing the seat covers in the washer and just having the frame cleaned. Even affects colours. Oxybrite and Roto Buff and Browning Prescription will also have a slight bleaching effect so should even things up.
