im practising
« on: January 07, 2009, 01:08:22 pm »
Hello all,
Im new to the world of window clening, i have spent most of my adult life in security and door supervising.
Unfortunately last year i was diagnosed with a condition which has debilitated me, and im now trying to recover the best i can, but cannot continue in my line of work.
So now im in the process of practising my window cleaning on my house and my friends houses etc..
Yesterday i was making an attempt with my old cheap squeeggee and my windows looked bleeding awful, but i thought perhaps this was more to do with my rubber being old and naff rather than my limited skill?
you recon once iv got my new kit, the windows'l look less streaky

If you are using a squeegee you need to use a proper professional one. I use "ettore". You might also want a selection of sizes. Mine are 12, 16 and 18 inch. You will get better with practice.

Well I could be wrong but is not window cleaning more active than security work!

You might also want a 6" squeegee. Dont buy from B&Q You need to go to a proper supplier. There should be one near you somewhere if not order online.

Best of luck!

It is, but without being nosey, I suspect some conditions are not debilitating in the physical sense.

Stress, for example, a customer of mine works as security for some music store, and this guy gets some grief from shop-lifters; once he was attacked on a train by a shoplifter he caught, who later recognised him.

use a new rubber blade evry week or two use fresh water pref hot or warm evry 3 houses
keep practising and aim to get a wfp systeme after a time to get hard jobs done safer and save
time also keep plenty of fresh cloths handy and never use scrim or microfiber on sills
keep glass cloths for glass best of luck

Change to a new rubber when needed, if you leave it weekly or more it will be leaving smears, particularly on the end of the blade.

A rubber doesnt have any given life-span, it can be new that morning and useless 2 hours later on dodgy windows. I used to get through a couple a week on average.

The only reason im using the old squeeggee is just to practise technique really.

Developing a good technique is only one of the aspects of window cleaning, if you search through this site you will find many links to videos on u-tube, that demonstrate the different ways of using squeegies.
You will also find many threads describing different ways of developing a round of regular customers.
You will have to ask yourself whether you want to get into window cleaning for the long term, because in the short term it can take some time before you start to earn a decent income.
Lastly, do you have a head for heights, it used to amaze me the number of lads that after spending a month or so training with me, they used to say they didn't want to do upstairs becuse they were afraid of heights.

I have just clicked on your website link and that image on your first page is 2MB in size, you need to resize that. Here, use this one I done for you, the page will open a lot quicker with this image rather than the other one.

thanks essexwc. i may take you up on that.
heights dont really worry me im always up and down ladders...well i used to be... but like i say, once i have had abit more practice i should be fine. iv been lookin at youtube watchin various tips and no doubt il pick it up as i go along.
i do intend to be in it for the long haul and should it fail miserably then iv given it ago.
At the end of the day il only get out of it what wot i put in.
