gave up on this week
« on: January 07, 2009, 08:14:24 am »
i think the only safe thing to do in this weather is to give up on this week. at least then i will not be behind just starting up later after xmas. after reading posts people say this is unusual so am hoping it goes away next week. this is only my second winter and still building but will try and put something away for next year to allow for this but not been able to at moment.has anyone else decided to leave it this week.

Hi Karygate...yep I have given up on this week ( I live in Holland) Cancelled Mon work and rescheduled the rest of the week...tue, wed, thr...I do not normally work fridays anyhow.

We have had some serious -12 weather where I live and daytime temps of -7 to -4 most days...

Likeyour self I thought about putting money away for down-days, though I hate having to use it...it has been there so whilst not happy about using it, it is good to have..my plan is to have around 2k just as my down-days slush fund.

I suppose the thing is now we have seen this extreme weather all of us should keep these memories with us during the year and 'make hay whilst the sun shines' is a phrase that springs to mind.

Don't feel bad about skipping/postponing the work...yes loads are working but equally loads are not...so there are many of us not feeling too good and getting under our wives/gf/partners feet ;D

Use the time to formulate your 'plan/projections/ambitions' for 2009.

If you cannot be bother or have done it...get yourself a subscribtion to the x-channal ;D ;D

Good luck Dave.

I'm off anyway this week with flu and now blocked sinus's. Snow is still frozen outside. No chance of a thaw until tomorrow maybe. Waiting for a new Merlin to arrive. Frost put the other one out of action.
Main thing is. Is to be safe most people still have snow around their houses so why risk breaking your limbs for the sake of a couple of days?

It's above freezing here. No frost.
Still got a solid system to thaw out from two day's sub zero though... :-\

Only got about 150 litres of water too, and can't get any more.

If I can get out later and do 40-50 quid i'll be well chuffed.

Well, that didn't take long, took my heater out of the van, took the duvet off the reel then heard a crunchy noise when i rotated the reel - frozen solid. That must have been one hell of a cold night last night! My van is only two feet away from my house too. Got a ceramic conservatory heater in there now, should be either like a furnace or an inferno soon.

My first bad morning in a very, very long time.

This morning my van doors were frozen solid because I overfilled last night. Many kettles of boiling water cured that problem.

Then my pump wouldn't work, poured boiling water over that too only too discover my tank outlet was frozen solid and snapped my inlet pump connection. Had to hunt around for a spare connection to replace it.

Next my microbore hose was frozen on the connections. Kettle of boiling water again to sort that problem out.

Then my heater wouldn't start, that had to be drained as it was frozen up. Ten minutes running hot put a smile on my face and I was ready to start work.

Late start because of everything freezing narked me off but the moral of the story is failure cannot live with persistency.

Well Simon W I did a bit yesterday in Bristol - 12 noon - 4pm and today 8am to 3pm. (trad.- ing doors, rest wfp) But ... The first hour was indoor trad. and then wfp outside with screen wash in the water from 9.15 and it was a fraction icy underfoot so I put a bit of grit down.

A bit of forethought and you can keep going.
