My water is boiling...
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:26:20 pm »
Hi guys

Having just read all the threads on water freezing etc.

Here in Perth OZ I'm having the opposite problem. We just came back on Saturday after 2 weeks camping down the south west of Western Australia. I have solar hot water which means I have 2 large panels with a large tank on the roof. The panels absorb the solar energy and heats up the water which is then stored in the tank When my missus tried to wash some clothes the pressure relief valve opened and released all the hot water from the tank down the release pipe which overflows down  the path at the side of my house. I had boiling hot water running for about 20 minutes until the water cooled down and the valve closed. I guess after 2 weeks of high temps up to 39C and no hot water being used something had to give.

Just shows its a funny old world, you freezing your butts off in the UK and Europe and us down here looking at 37C for the next 4 or 5 days. Just spent 5 hours top dressing the lawn and I'm feeling pretty buggered. Nothing a couple of cold beers won't fix.

Stay warm guys. I still remember when I repaired tv's for a tv rental company in Ireland. I never started before 10:00 am. I was a slow starter, I spent my first 20 minutes sitting on a big storage heater which was red hot. If I waited long enough the old tea lady used to bring in a coffee and 2 biscuits about 10:15. She would always say "If you keep sitting on that heater you will get piles". She might have been right I do suffer a bit  ;D ;D

John,

I'm not jealous, honestly.  I know you guys have a good standard of living in Australia; Wor Lasses Uncle was a 'Ten Pound Pom' and is an affluent self-made man; big house, swimming pool and lots of holidays.

But I wouldn't like to live there; honest.

And being too hot can be just as oppressive as being too cold; if not more so.

Hi Tosh

Lots of 10 pound poms did very well for themselves. There were great opportunities in them days as the place was only just being developed and some parts were not even explored then. Nothing fancy on this side although I do have a pool but then so do lots of others. I should have invested in property and rented it out. I would be a millionaire by now, not struggling to get a few dollars to  buy a new van.

I agree about the heat. I think its easier to warm up than cool down. When I get too hot I head down the bottle shop and head for those big walk-in beer fridges (Boy are they cold). Only problem you feel twice as hot when you come out.

Its a good life though and I know its not for everyone. Very different lifestyle. In the UK you have window cleaners In Australia we have lawnmower men. By the way its cost me about 12 quid to have my lawns mowed every 2 weeks and it only takes him 15 minutes. On the other hand window cleaners are as rare as hens teeth, Any I see are trad in old rust buckets and not very professional looking. Very different cultures.

Tosh said it all really...its nice taking holidays in these places, but working in it is a different kettle of fish. I'm looking forward to march/April/May, then it gets a little harder to work.

When I saw the subject line, I thought he was making a cuppa.  I didn't think the Aussies had any water left.  Has it rained since last Easter?  I've not read anything about drought recently so wonder if things have improved over there.

Believe me you could have made a cuppa it was that hot. The drought has improved a bit and they are even having floods in parts of Queensland. Parts of Western Australia reached 47C yesterday. Its going to be 37C for the next 3-4 days  in Perth. Anyone interested in solar hot water systems this is the one I've got. My old one lasted over 20 years.

I've experienced living in temps in the high 30s and lower 40s and that's seriously nasty stuff.  It's just too hot to work, but I believe you lot in Australia get up 'in the middle of the night' and start work at daft o' clock to avoid the heat.

Give me 2C anyday compared with that heat.

If we agree to send you some of our cold weather and you send us some of your hot, the temp should be just about right for us all.

Seriously, I would rather be cold. I would hate to live in Oz. I lived for a while in West Africa and even now the thought of that heat makes me cringe.

Must be my Viking genes

Its good to see curry has become a traditional POMMY Dish  ;D ;D ;). You must be watching too many Australian soapies . Mullets disappeared years ago, but I forgot british tv is years behind oz. ;D ;D. As for Oasis, Qantas has banned them from flying in their planes after previous problems, I'll give them a miss too thanks. ;)
