John,

The backpack is more than upto the job; I've been using one for about four years now.

Also have a search of this site for DIY Zensorflex pole; it's a good lightweight pole to start off with; dirt cheap too.

Good luck.

The size of pole depends on the size of the houses you are cleaning, I use a 17' excel pole which I got from cleantech, this is lightweight and capable of cleaning windows on the 3rd floor.

As for backpacks, if you want the best then go for the new one from "Omnipole" or if you just want something cheap and cheerfull then try "wintecs"

the Zensorflex fishing pole will do every1 of my domestic 2 storey houses, 1 i use a 6 ft extension to make it easy, though if i cannot be bothered to walk back to the van i do without

check out the DIY pole guide i did ( just close the h & t together )

to go wfp with a back pack what other equipment do you need. I'm trad at the mo and wanna get to the windows with roofs below it hard with a ladder

a smallish RO / DI unit ( 75 GPD ish ) under 100 quid

a 210 L rainwater butt ( 20 quid ) or if you have the space a bigger IBC tank ( 50 quid )

a backpack, window cleaning warehouse have them for 80 quid

a pole ( take your pic, i use the Zensorflex which you can build for 25 quid )

a lightweight brush ( many use the tesco's value brush with jets fitted and a few bristles cut out ) less than 10 quid

some hose to get the water from backpack to brush head, 10 M Hozelock micro irrigation pipe, 5 quid in most DIY stores B&Q etc etc

some 25 L barrels to carry your water from home to site, you can get them from car wash places, they have the soap in them, you will get these for free as they sling them out, or buy them for 4 / 5 quid each new

thats about it for your basic starter kit, many use this setup day in day out, and are very happy with it
