I`ve used it and it was rubbish if you squirt your washers and it`s really cold it`ll still freeze, the washers on my van didn`t work this morning properly until about 10.30.

Why not use isopropanol in your washer bottle?

No there`s a thought but i don`t need it normally as i`m parked off the road,it would help in your bucket for sure.

RESULT! Used diluted screen wash( 1/2 litre to 125 litres ). No smears, everybody paid, no jets freezing up when idle, even at 4 this afternoon.

3 x 5 litres undiluted @ £10 from Halfords.
Should last all winter.

What would it do to resin then?  I've not tried this before but I have considered it - so long as it goes through an extra resin vessel to lower the TDS before use.  Is there a reason I shouldn't do this?

Started today at 11 am - did a small commercial and two houses and stopped at 2.30 as the temp was dropping and I have never used IPA or anything before - just have an insulated tank in the van and a small 45w electric element heater which I put next to the pump..

Before I did the houses I bought some of the Halfords 5 litres stuff and stuck 4 litres in my tank at a ratio of 1/100 it has raised my TDS from 001 to 003.

Doing an experiment tonight - I have got 4 beakers with the following ratio of screen wash in - 1.25% / 2.5% / 5% / and 7.5%

My van tank (400L) has 1.25% in

My static tank (600) uninsulated is pure 000/001 with no additives.

I will let you know the results taken at 7am tomorrow on here at 8 am tomorrow morning.
It's a game of three halves!

What does screenwash have is it ethanol? If it is, i wonder why they don't use isopropanol in it's manufacture, maybe it's because it's a solvent. How do they manage in the cold countries?

Another thought : wouldn't it contain detergent for cleaning bugs and grime from the screen too? I wonder if the soap gets trapped in the resin?

OK results of my experiment

I put 5 x 200ml beakers out under my car port on top of my static tank with various concentrations of screen wash.

Air temperature was minus 2 degrees

At 7 am temperature in each beaker was recording at 1 degree celsius on my TDS meter

Beaker of tap water  TDS 268 Ice crust and slushy underneath

Beaker 1 Pure water TDS 000  Ice crust and slushy underneath

Beaker 2  1.25% Screen wash no crust but as slushy as beaker 1

Beaker 3  2.5% Screen wash slightly slushy

Beaker 3  5% Screen wash clear but crystally at edges

Beaker 4 7.5 % Screen wash clear but a little crystally

Outside tank (full) at 600L TDS 000 - reading 3 degrees C  (no screen wash)

Van tank (insulated) full 400L with screen wash TDS 002 reading 4 degrees C

Bucket in van with an inch of soapy (no screen wash) water in it - solid ice (far side of van)

Bucket on a belt in van - applicater icy. (nearer heater by pump)

thin hose to brush iced up

microbore reel slushy inside.

half inch hose from tank to pump slightly slushy except near pump where heater is.

My conclusions -

The bulk of my static tank and van tank have kept the temperature of the water slightly higher as it takes longer for them to freeze. The insulation in my van - 2" polystyrene encased in plywood on the sides and space blanket under the plywood on the top has kept the van tank a degree higher.

Notes:-

My static tank gets the morning sun (if out) from about 8.45 to 9.45 which helps and much of the car port where it sits gets the afternoon sun for an hour. (The house blocks it for much of the day) I beleive this raises the temperature by a degree or two over a long period.

It's a game of three halves!
