Check that it's a wool pile Ax. Especially during the 80's, acrylic was a popular fibre in axminsters. Not many around now but occasionally you can be caught out.

Being an older carpet, vac it really well. North/South, East/West. Perhaps repeat. Time spent now will be rewarded later.

Presuming fitting and dyes are OK, follow Russells advice on chemistry or perhaps use a Woolsafe detergent rinse, but acid rinse is fine. Even if fibre is acrylic, stay Woolsafe because of the jute in the weave.  Acrylic responds well to heat.

Acrylic Axminsters were the Belgian Wilton of their day, although not as moisture sensitive. I would still rinse/extract these but with care.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

axeminsters have a possibility of shrikage if overwet, if its a man  made fibre whichyou should check then its got a higher possibility of shrinkage.
if its wool keep the moisture down, if its man made then keepthe moisture right down, or bonnet buff it, WHich ive never done before.
ps, use an airmover to dry it quicker.

Cleaned it yesterday using one step premium fineline woolsafe and then extrated with fabric fibre rinse. kept moisture down low and had the airmovers on it right away. came up pretty good she only had the hal and lounge done but got a call last night to say could i go bac and do up the stairs as it looks a little odd. but she is a happy custy.

Thanks for advice guys
