« on: November 30, 2008, 11:08:34 pm »
If i tried to build my own website.. what are the first steps to take?

can anyone simplify it for me please. in an easy to understand order?

E.g

Get a domain name i use www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/
£2.97 per year.
And i use www.dream-hosting.co.uk for my sites and its £9.99 a year and you can host 5 sites on this.

They have a free web builder to use i have not used it so can't say what it's like.

It costs a little more, but I'd always recommend www.letshost.ie as their package is fully loaded. You can control every aspect of your domain, and will never ever run out of bandwidth. You can run up to 25 websites from 1 hosting package too.

Thanks for all the help... i have just copied this below....... from dream hosting.....

We guarantee network uptime to be 99.9% or better. This guarantee allows for approximately 45 minutes per month and 8 hours per year of network downtime. Dream-Hosting.co.uk's cumulative network uptime since the opening of the new Lansing datacenter is 100.00%.

what does this mean....

anyway... so i will find a host...

then a domain name.... do i then have a website? ???

What operating system, perl version & cgi scripts does dream hosting offer?

Might sound like rubbish now,.. but it can make a big difference in the end,...

Letshost.ie    worth the couple of extra quid!

Its just to cover themselves incase the place where the server gets a powercutor something.
Or they need to shut the server down for upgrade or whatever.
This is normal for all hosting companies to put this up.

Thanks for all the technical info  ;)

i have just been looking through the site again... dream etc

so, a silver package would give me webspace £9.99 per year.

then i go to the cheaper domain website to register for £2.97

Then i go back to DREAM HOST. and register my name on my hosting space.....

Then i go to a free template site for all my web pages.????

is that me up and running then?

 :D

Thats more or less it.

Once you have your domain name.
when you register with the hosting company they will ask for the website name then tell you to point the name at there server.
They will give you two DNS address's.
You then go back to the people you bought the website name from and log in.
There will be a part in there for DNS just click that put the two address's in the hosting company gave you and click ok.

It will take anything from 1 hour upto 24 hours for you site to first show.

but you can still build your site and upload it whilst you waiting.
You can get a free website template and edit that in an editor there's plenty of free one's about or use the hosting companies website builder.

This is ok but www.letshost.ie are not even in the UK. Is that important you may ask? Well yes. We are in the UK and our seach engine is either ending in .co.uk

If you were in America you would not seach on Google.co.uk it would be Google.com. If you look at Google its has 2 radio buttons. The web and UK Sites. Most people select UK sites. So if your hosted on IE then it wont return all that well in the ranking. I know I was once a web designer and SEO exec.

So get your domain from 1 company. Its easier to maintain.

Plus helps again with ranking.. aas if you have to alter Dns to point to where the site is hosted.

Just because the service is in a .ie domain doesn't mean they only sell .ie!! I've plenty of .com & .co.uk domains from them that rank very well!!!
They do offer a fully loaded hosting package too,. so definitely get both your domain and hosting from the 1 company!
