Appointments, your opinion, please.
« on: November 18, 2008, 12:59:02 pm »
I arrived at my first three customers today, all within 70 yds of each other, to find the back gates locked; they know that I don’t climb over, so I knocked, and nobody answered.

Somebody was there at one, but wouldn’t come to the door, so all three were bypassed, and I continued.

Forgetful, or no money, I wondered?

Last week, I had two cancellations, one being from a young lady, who only booked me two weeks before – I’ve never done the job yet [!], the other from a dippy old bat who told me on the first clean, that she had very little money.

However, I have had several other enquiries for pricing new work recently, [all my work is domestic], and Friday afternoon is set aside for pricing up.

All of the jobs that I’ve “lost”, apart from the one that was never done, have only been done two, three, or four times, and before I get ribald comments, my standards of work, and finish, are the best.

I clean every part of every window, every time, and that includes under the sills when doing the trad bits, and as an encore, I even clean the glass!

They all tell me that I am the best window cleaner they have seen in years.

So, am I being “used” by custies, because I provide good value, do an excellent job, and people are getting me to do two or three cleans and then dropping me, because the finish lasts longer?

Should I tell the prospective new customers, that I can fit them in, but only as “casual” customers?

That way, they ring up when they want service, I go and work the magic, and charge ‘em, say one and a half cleans?

That way, it’s financially worth it for me, and I don’t have to be bothered about locked gates, because I’m working to appointments.

They get the cleaning done when they want, and have a enough shekels saved up.

Your valued opinions please, Ladies and Gentlemen.

I work on an appointment system and still get people forget to open the gate, some do otto save money others just forget. I wouldn't be bothered about loosing work done 2-3 times as this happens often, it like the bedding in period. Charge extra for the first clean it gets to of the time wasters.

If you are not there at the same time, every time, (or at least on the same day) - this will happen occasionally - very frustrating, I know.

I don't always ring up the night before to remind them, especially if the weather forcast is for rain the next day. But, if I decide that its not too bad on the day and I want to work, I ring them up to say I'll be round about 'such' a time.  Occasionally they are not in, or say that they will be out at 'such' a time (can I leave it till the day after) - that's frustrating too!

I am at an age where I don't want to be 'climbing over' and some customers don't want me doing that anyway.

I think that you have to be a 'bit' flexible these days when people don't like leaving their back gate unlocked.

I do a handful of properties with 'Cleans by appointment'  (for an extra charge) but I wouldn't want too many - you really need to know what your regular income is going to be each week so that you can budget accordingly.

I ru a scheduled service which for most is exactly every 8weeks...on their cleaning day they get a card saying I have been and they also get their next date which is 8 weeks to the day.

In the event that a gate is locked...using a bit of 'common' I will either drop the price a little or just charge them the full price as agreed....

When taking on new customers it is stressed to them that it is their resppnsibilty to ensure that I get the access that we agree.

I do not happen that often but when it does...you just have to make your mind up as to bill them fully or drop the price a little.

Cheers
Dave.

Personally if you dont phone them, they will probably forget you are coming anyway.

I always get "oh, has it been a month already".. with me looking at their windows nice and clean from last time :P

You cant always say what day and time you will be going to clean their windows as many things can happen, like your van breaks down, or it rains non stop for a fortnight?????? So they have a choice, i turn up unannounced, or i call them the night before.

If i turn up un-anounced and the gate is not unlocked, i would normally climb over - but seeing as some are at an age where they dont want to, so i would just do the fronts and charge them approx 60% of their normal bill.

If i was to turn up and they know im coming via a call the night b4 then i would just to the fronts and charge full price (but in the back of my mind, accept 60% of full price if they where to complain).

They prob wont notice you haven't done the rear anyway :P

Ive always done some rather than non (if im not back in the area again soon) so that way you get some  money, rather than none..

i dont clean by appointment .( and dont phone in advance )
they are cleaned 4 weekly , some 8 weekly . i do a lot of front onlys , so no problem .
customers who have the whole house are charged front only if for whatever reason i cant get to the back, i will climb into the easier ones .

I don't do appointments to much hassle.
I start my round at the beginning and work right through to the end then do it all again.

I have 4 customers in total that i ring and i have the all leaving the money out.

If i turn up at a customers and can't access the back i just do the front.
I don't climb over any gates.

Although i do open some with my minipole as i can usually lift the bolt and slid it back without having to climb over.

Customers with sash windows or tilt & turn get a phonecall and my good earners, the rest can whistle, cause it's not worth the hassle promising appointments when we can't control when/if it's going to rain, too much hassle and stress...not needed.
