Hi all,

possibly not a Carpet Cleaning question but you never know...

Just had a customer call me for advice...coz that's Free 

Their son has managed to get chewing gum stuck to their 'Silk' Curtain and they are wondering what's the best method of removing it.

Apparently an ice cube to freeze it doesn't look lke it would do the job. As I don't clean Curtains, particularly Silk Curtains I wondered if anyone had any ideas please ?

I'll even offer 50% of what I'll earn for the job  :

I would use a small plastic spatula, keep dipping it some solvent and gently prise it off working at the base (starting from the outside). If it comes off, there may be a residue patch (or even a faint colourant) left behind that may not come out.

I did think solvent, but was concerned about it's effect on the silk.

solvent will be safe on silk,  DRI PRO or similar, if in doubt test on hidden bit
let the solvent do the work and be patient.

Ok, thanks, so the solvent route looks the way to go..

any ideas on a retail product that they could try as I won't be their way for some time ?

I'd recommend for her to have them dry cleaned at a shop, they immerse the fabric in solvent but will pretreat it first, dry cleaning is far cheaper and less hassle for all concerned IMO.

But I would say that as I have a dry cleaners, well 'she' has!

WD40 - Great for removing chewing gum. Not sure about on silk as its active ingredient is fish oil. Also good for spraying on your bait if you are carp fishing.

Easy to rember rule of life that should solve many problems:
If it doesnt move and it should - WD40
If it moves and it should'nt       - Duck tape

Les,

A variation on the ice cube trick is to place the whole curtain in a deep freezer over night. A small ice cube does not have the "ooph" for this job.
