What do you guys charge for carpet protection, I use scotchgard and have been pricing at 40% the cost of the clean, so for an average £55 lounge clean the scotchgard was £22 extra.

Just curious as to weather I'm over charging or under charging in comparison.

 I just charge the same again ie: if they have £70 worth of carpet cleaned and all protected , then

                                                    Giving it free ( in high traffic areas) to my custys on plans , and asking if

I might have misunderstood your post but you seem to be suggesting that those who are not on maintenance plans will be charged an extra 15-20% and then those on plan will get a certain amount for free.

To me that doesn't sound too ethical for those not on plans to subsidise those on a plan.

AS I say I could have mis-read your post.

Incidentally I charge about 40% of the cost of cleaning. Still make a good profit but does encourage them to have the carpet cleaned more regularly which means I get to see the client more often (they are less likely to forget me), and the carpet is possibly kept to a better standard because it's costing less to maintain and therefore cleaned more regularly and ultimately generate more turnover.

Correct me if I'm wrong though.

why does it encourage your custys to have cleans more regular. thought the idea of protection was to keep them cleaner for longer, or have i misread your post.
ps, this is not one of my jokey sarcy comments, its a genuine honest newbie question.

Maintenance plans Derek!

You pay for carpets to be cleaned and protected but instead of paying for it in 1 go you pay half the cost then pay over the next 6 months the remainder then you get a free highlight clean (that's walkways to me and you) BUT.....then you keep paying up frnt for next years clean per month.

£240 clean

£120 at time of clean and 6 months at x £20 =£ 240 but...

keep on paying the £20 a month and you have half the clean paid for for next year.

or if you are creative at Maths you would have 2 years money £480
less £120 up front and monthly installments gor the next 12 months £30.

See where I'm going?

I'll try and answer the question.

The trick is to get clients to realise that in the long run having their carpets cleaned regularly will mean a healthier environment, better indoor air quality, longer life for the carpet blah,blah. You know where I'm coming from with this.

If you charge a lot for protecting it and then tell custys that it wears off and that cleaning the carpet will speed up the removal of the protection then if they have paid a large amount for protection then there will undoubtedly be a feeling that they won't have it cleaned so often.

But if you sell protection at a level where they can see it's benefits but realise it needs to be replaced relatively regularly  and it's not too expensive to protect they will hopefully have the carpet cleaned more regularly. Overall therefore you should make more money over a couple of years rather than making big money off one job with the same custy. And as you will visit them more often they will remember you better and also are less likely to shop around when they finally get round to the next clean.

It works for me and I hope I have given you a better explanation of what I do.

Whilst protection will help prolong life I guess its real perceived benefit is protecting against spills and stains.

Thats how i have always have worked and like us we are looking at the long term in years to come.

Think is sounds like you said easy money to be made but i would rather clean the carpet twice a year and get other carpets to clean in the same house so over the years we are better off

              to explain my method more: missed out the fact that the priced charged has been the same for bout 8-10 years but not set by me, however slowly slowly I am changing the way the biz runs.

  Pre my full control: £25 for the 1st carpet- £35 Thourgh Lounge
                                £50 - £70 Suite 1x3 2x1 p
                                Full house carpets: 4bed,L,D,HSL  £110 - £150 ( Less if millionaires )
                                Leather 1x3 1x2 £70 - £90
                                £1.25 per sq yd Commercial

            Not advertised the biz for bout 6 years but still very busy.

           He reconed that anymore would be ripping the custy off !???

            Always give a 1st rate servise as well. Out of every 10 phone calls 4 are recos!
            Not because of cheapness because of service ( I know this cause they get new price )   

           So ive worked out to bring things into line it most be slow with all the regs but new get a very much amended price, my quote to getting the job is 9-10 most weeks is 10-10 but I come from a marketing sales trainer back ground, Yet to go into a house to quote but that will change next year,
 
 In the middle of sortin a door can team and poss a tel can system , but the mrs is having a baby so its going to go on hold-ish till I can give 110% ( 1 Job a Day till 2 weeks after Birth)

How I made Just over 7 million for a corporate company over the years I am now going to try to make myself
a few quid adding a few non-agresive passive sales techniques ( Hopefully)

  But it like anything you most be the best that you can be before you drive full steam with your ambishons
