Builders cleans aarrrgh
« on: October 01, 2008, 09:08:21 am »
Did a job yesterday that I thought would only be a couple of hours, turned out to be the whole day.  Never done a proper builders clean in the past 11 years so I'll just have to put this down to experience.  What got me was taking stickers off on the inside that had been partly plastered into the wall.

You guys that do them all the time what do you charge?  For 16 basic windows inside and out I charged £120 way too low should have been more like £320.  What makes it worse is I have to do another 2 jobs for the builder at the same prices. :'( I'm thinking in future you should be looking at 7 or 8 times basic price for in and out.

Simon.

yep yep, worst kind of jobs them, i did them when i was working for a cleaner so never priced them myself but i know they are always a pain because they are soooo dirty and you got to get them near perfect!! Always work out your price and then double, triple it then add a bit more!!

know exactly what you mean about the stickers/tape you get thats partly rendered over around upvc frames, it caught me out and took alot longer than i had imagined, I did quote £30 an hour with no certainty of how long it would take me ( it was 7 hours so £210 total not bad takings for me considering van was parked all day with minimal fuel costs ) but I still think I was too low really.
Might be a silly question but  what do others do?
price the job before and quote high or charge by the hour until the job is done ?

Its so easy to get caught out with builders cleans and often it will take twice a long as expected.

We by the day per person that way if it takes longer we are covered.

And a lot of the time they will ring you and say they are ready when in fact they are not.

Builder seem to panick a lot as they have there deadlines to hit.
A lot of times we have turned up and not been able to do the job for some reason but they still get charged.

Today we went home early as got to the 3rd factory unit we are doing and they were laying a concrete path and the other end laying block paving and sparks outside wiring up and we were supposed to wash all the exterior cladding, bullnose and windows we just could not do the job but again they still get charged.
