Hi all!

Just got my quarterly bank charge statement and its at £120!!! This is more than I have ever paid before. Is it worth going in to talk to them about how unpleased I am at such a high sum so that maybe they could lower it or would it be easier just to change banks to get a better deal?

I currently use Barclays by the way.

DO you get charged for writing cheques and using your debit card?

 if so apply for a company credit card and use it for all business transaction then set a monthly DD to pay the full amount at the end of the month, this way you'll only get 1 transaction charge.

are you always in your overdraft? this will mount up the charges.

Am in abbey myself and free banking for at least 6 years so far

Abbey for carpet cleaning and Post Office for Dry cleaners.

No charges at all, Post Office deal with cash as it can go over the counter and Abbey for cheques sent by post.

Yes I am with Barclays aswel and I think it is ridiculous that they are charging almost a pound for every transaction, would it not be easier to just swop your account to a current account? and the crap thing about it all is having the time to change everything over.

Alot of banks do the hard bit for you, 30 mins and it can be done.

Can't comment specifically about the total level of charges without extra information.

If you turned over £1m a quarter then it would be good value, if only £7000 then on the face of it it would appear expensive.

Banks simply want to cover their costs and make a profit (a bit like carpet cleaners really). If it costs £500 a quarter to run your account then that's what they will want to charge you. However as others like Mike have said their are often ways of changing things to bring this total cost down. If you can get the £500 down to say £80 and that is all you pay you will be happier because you are paying less and the bank will be happier because you are still covering their costs. They have no interest in taking £400 off you to run an account costing £500 if they can take £80 off you for an account that is costing £80 to run.

I got all my bank charges back last year and also sued Lloyds for the return of the PPI on a loan.

By the time 5 years interest was added, plus interest on the loan I got back near on £16,000 

Once the interest is added the money they owe goes through the roof.

and yes you can pay thro the Post Office or post or their branches

Alliance & Leicester also do very good deals and again you can use the Post Office to pay in.

I think there is now some confusion in this thread between the original observation about charges for operating an account and penalty charges which is a different ball-game all together. my original comment was about the former not the latter.

i had 1 unpaid chq inwards £2.00  went thru 2nd time
overdraft fee £30.00 which i hadnt used
account fee £16.50
3 statements 95p each
rest where

non automated debits @ 69p each
credits paid in @75p each
cash paid out @ 63p per £100
chq's paid in @ 30p each

Problem is most was due to taking cash out on fridays for staff wages !!!!

I am with LloydsTSB and going to tell then to stick it, after being charge £95.00 in bamk charges, first I will try and get it back though

We with Barclays as well just got our charges £120 for the privilage of them looking after our money!!
We pay our staff via BAC's so we only get charged .69 per transaction. On the odd occasion i need cash i use the machine as its free they only charge you for pulling your own money out over the counter. They get you for paying in, paying out, and £5.50 a month for the privilage of having an account with them!! I am so going to source another bank
