chewing gum removal
« on: February 16, 2005, 09:09:36 pm »
Been asked to quote for cleaning carpet in a city centre retail outlet. There is LOADS of gum.

I currently use Solutions Chewing Gum remover, or even Eco-spotter, i also have prochems freeze method.  But the amount of gum i normally have to deal with is minimal.

How do you all tackle gum on commercal jobs?
Does anyone use the prochem "Bazooka" and how does it perform?

Has been covered!

Bazookas forget it put the money towards a steamer in this type of scenario.

Hi Jacko

I do some of the shopping centres in Cardiff

I get a bread knife bend blade so it sit's  flush on top of the carpet, I then use a sawing action to cut the top of the gum of  with out damaging the carpet (theres half of the gum gone) then a blast with the steam gun, apply a gum removal Product, rub with wire brush and then HWE with spotter, Job done

Really you want someone else working for you going ahead of you doing this  ;D

I have tryed many diffent ways, this one is by far the best  ;)

Hope this helps

Can someone recommend a decent 'steam gun' for removing chewing gum?

Hi  There

The first steam gun I had was from Argos Only £30.00 Bargin! made its money on the first job. Good thing is it can be used for many other things in this industry ;D ;D

Down side is they are a bit small for big jobs as you have to refill all the time and  you have to wait for it to cool down first!

But a must have in your van

Hope this helps

Get off as much gum as you can using a knife. Apply Eco Spotter then using a cheap steam wallpaper stripper and just place the large wall tool on top of the gum for 20 odd seconds. The gum is really sticky and smelly, but it does come off.

I have a steam cleaning machine that cost well over a thousand pounds, and the wallpaper stripper works just as well on gum, and is much easier to carry. ( wallpaper strippers cost about £25 from B&Q).

Hi

Gavin, you are still living in the dark ages!!!

Without a doubt, Solutions chewing gum remover is by far the best product around at the moment, stab it with a spike, spray and remove. Easy!!!

Gavin...... Get in the fast lane!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Pest

Just you remeber Mr Richards who has helped you since you have been in this industry!!  ;D  ;D

I Try not to name Supplyers products as I find it can be a little unfair!

I do use the product you talk about but you still have to do more than you make out Ian  ???

Anyway you!

If it was as simply as that then why did't you get rid of all the gum on your first pub job??  and you were using Solutions gum remover

AND THEN HAVING TO GIVE THEM MONEY OF YOUR PRICE  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)   ::)

Fast lane I was not the one sat on my bum all December!!!!!!!!!

Hi Steve

Im sorry but this is impossible to remove gum in 4 secs that has been walked in by thousands of shoppers over time and is rock hard ,and to remove all sicky residue left behind, especially  if it is cheap kids gum which is what you come across in most shopping centres!

Old and deeply imbedded gum may require an extra application with repeated agitation but  which method doesn't require extra application ???

Gavin

spike the gum, treat with no 6 do not allow any dwell time lift the edges of the gum with the chisel end of the brush provided then agitate with the wire brush end using a forward and back movement but not scrubbing, move the brush in a circular motion, and even hard crusted gum will break down within 4 - 5 seconds,

I have demonstrated successfully hundreds of times. even on pool room very cheap carpet, on very stubborn wads Gary's method of lifting the top layer and then spiking before treatment is alos very effective.

Best regards Nick

Hi

The original post was asking how best to remove gum in retail outlet with LOADS of gum.

Next time you go shopping have a look down and take a look at how walked in and imbedded the gum is, This is due to very high foot traffic!

It is the same in places like pubs and nightclubs.

So to anyone who whats to remove this sort of gum read my earlyer post and give your self more than 4 seconds to remove it, and dont think you can just stab, spray and remove ::)

Hi Nick

What you and gary have said is what I have said earlyer on in this post.

But what about what has been left in carpet this must be removed as it will attract soil etc and all of this takes longer than 4 - 5 seconds!! from start to finsh.

The reason I go on about time is I do not what Newbies reading this to think Gum is seconds to remove then coming a croper when pricing!

I to have done this hundreds of times and yes sometimes it flys of but sometimes it does not!

Gavin
