A quick question about staff hours

I feel sure I've seen a discussion already along the lines of this topic but I can't find it when I search back so sorry if I'm repeating myself!
When you put your staff on, say, a 17 hr week contract, does this include or exclude travelling time between jobs?
I hope you don't mind me asking. I'm thinking that it's going to have to include it but I just wondered if anyone had a way around this issue.

Hi
I worked for a cleaning company and they paid me a travel allowance (using my car) to clients only. That way they are getting paid for their travel and you only pay them for the hours they work at the clients.
Anyone see a problem with this?

If I was a cleaner I would not expect to be paid for travel time to first job unlesss it was miles away,
But I would expect to be paid for travel between jobs.
Again providing I was close to home no need for travel to be paid between last job and home. Unless it was miles away.
I would imagine if you did not pay for in between travel I would be putting in for Very large compensation claim plus distress and bullying damages

Not trying to pick holes
As I understand it you travel to various building sites some more than say an hours travelling time
The hours start from the time you arrive, and finish when you leave that site?
I could live with that if travelling time was no more than an hour each way.
I think the origional question concerned mobile cleaners who travel from house to house.
In that situation I would want to be paid from time I arrived at first house until time I left lat house
With perhaps all time spent travelling to first call and from last call paid for if total travelling time in a day exceeded one hour, plus of course milage allowance if own vehicle used.

Guys
I feel it is only correct to pay from start in morning till finish at night.
Try telling a delivery driver he only gets paid when he is delivering the package but not for driving between deliveries.
Your staff are your business without them you have nothing treat them with respect and give and take and hope for the same in return.
We allways paid minimum 4 hrs for half day for residential cleaners. Or if they were contract cleaners as per contract but we had some travel from one contract to another they allways got paid for travel between contracts.

Hi George! Surely it is different in the case of drivers. If he is starting a job straight from his home and then finishes when he gets back home then I would assume he should get paid from the minute he leaves to the minute he gets back. BUT if he drives to a workplace then starts his job and then finishes when he is back at his workplace then drives home, he wouldn't get paid for driving to and from home (if you see what I mean). I worked in an office and I got paid from the minute I signed in at work, not for driving to and from work. In the case of cleaners whether doms, commercial, industrial etc etc (specifically doms in my case) I wouldn't expect to pay my cleaner for their drive to the first place of work, but if they had more then one job per day, then of course I would pay their mileage allowance between jobs. In the case of one of my Clients, as he is substantially out of my travel to work area and was desperate for a Cleaner, he was happy to pay a mileage allowance himself!!

Hi
I pay my staff usually from when they arrive on site till they have finished their work....including any travelling time in the meantime.
However, if there is half an hour driving or more to get to their first site before work commences, I do pay them for the travelling time in these instances.

Hi there!
I pay my girls from the start & finish of each job. I do not pay for travelling time but do schedule in time for travelling between each job. Otherwise each job is rushed and not done properly to compensate for
non-paid travelling time. Seems to work fine!

Hi there
The staff that work for us are part-time and on a contract to be paid by the hour, whether they do 4 hours one day and no travelling, they will be paid for 4 hours, or they do 9 hours including 2 hours travelling and will be paid 9 hours.

Yes, my staff love and worship me and the ground I walk on....!!....then I realised it was just a dream....
Anyway, they do realise that I am a big softee....but they do work damm hard for me.

I allocate time slots e.g. 9.15 - 11.15 then next slot 11.30 to 12.30 to allow 15 mins between jobs. However practically all our jobs are local.
Tim - Perhaps I ought to become an employee and work for you!! Any vacancies in Kent!!

I pay 20p per mile travelling allowance, which is claimable (is that a real word?) back from the IR. As long as it is work related and not traveliing to and from work.....that way the Cleaners get something out of it, but it doesn't come out of my pocket, so to speak!!
