In Ireland the VAT threshold is much MUCH lower.

Its good though IMO to be VAT registered even if you are a little below the limit. When you're going for the commercial work it makes you look that much more professional.

You can do vat yourself with a simple spreadsheet and save £40 per month!

Good point , but in the long run I think a good accountant can save you money , and I dont leave anything to chance !

Good point , but in the long run I think a good accountant can save you money , and I dont leave anything to chance ! 

An accountant can save you money, but not on VAT. VAT is chargeable to the customer and payable to HMRC. As mentioned a spreadsheet done by yourself at time cost rather than money cost, and then just let your accountant do the rest.
