Challenge for Alex or other eccentric boffin
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:27:18 pm »
Heres a challenge for the age old problem of bolted down reels.

We need "something" inventing so we can have a multidirectional "something" which will assist in pulling the hose in any direction from the back of the van.

t needs to swivel in any direction without rubbing on the van, I have looked at the B&Q thing, but just doesnt seem right.

A swivel plate would be ideal but it wouldn`t stop the hose rubbing on the van doors.

My daughter has just bought her van Expert with 2 side loading doors.

Next week I'm building a swivel plate to mount my hose reel on so she can pull the hose from the side doors or the rear doors, is this the type of idea your on about Dave?

look on ebay for swivel seat bases

the big type are about 75 quid ( these are for drivers seats etc )

they also do a for a "buddy seat" these go for about 40 quid these are not so big as they are not TUV approved

bolt the b n q thingy under the van at rear in middle of van but protruding about 3 inch past the bumper. not perfect but is ok. must admit mines on a large trailer so might not work on van

What i want i think, is a swivelling hose guide rather than a swivelling hose reel mounted on the bumper but not protruding too far. I could almost mount it on my ladder rack with a few of Discounts rubber bands and a yoghurt pot.

Keep the locking bar fitted Matt as this will lock the swivel in a central position to the door your using, I can't describe this properly but you could add an arm to your hose reel (say 10'' long) with a hoop formed at the end of bar, this will take any pressure from the hose rubbing on the rubber door seals.

but then if you went across the road, the reel would be facing the wrong way, that was why i said about removing the bar as it would swivel as you moved around

wouldnt it ? ? ? ?

Have you seen those car wash's they have in local garages? Not the drive through ones but the ones were you have a pressure washer and brush?
The extend out on 2 poles, 1 upright and one vertical, they re Joined together by a heavy duty spring with a proper fitting on the end for the hose to be pulled through, I think that would be ideal and keep it high enough for pedestrians to walk underneath it.

jeff do you not think ther would be more risk of people triping over hose from the side doors than the back....
say..when you pull the hose out the back .you have extra what you need.. not many people would be walking over the hose at the back.. but with side doors it would be all over the footpath....
i think the swivel plate a good idea. may be with a rolling bar (like roof rack bars)for the hose to go under to have a bit more control over it..

If the reel was in the back of your van? then wouldn't you have to feed it back through to the other door?? to go across the road, or would you just drag it around the van? I'm not 100% sre of van operated systems Yet?

i am thinking about getting a towbar fitted
i reckon you could mount an arm with a swivel base on it (using one of those tow bar bike carrier things as a starting point) then some ki nd of clamps on base to hold reel

i was guessing people want it to go out the rear of the van ? ? ?

i dont have a van mount either, so just guessing to be honest

A tow bar mount sounds the best bet yet, something you can connect quickly
