We are currently getting around 2-3 cancellations a week. Pretty predictable when fuel, shopping etc is going up so much and its all over the papers. People only have so much money to spend and when things get tight we are an easy expense to drop.

My wife always worrys about it but I don't.

I wouldn't worry about your standard of work or wfp, it's just funds being tight and the customer wanting to blame something else, from my experience not many people like to say I can't afford it any more.

I suppose the main thing to consider is whether new jobs are coming in as quickly as the jobs that are being lost.  I've had odd weeks recently where the losses have exceeded the gains but, over a month, I still gain a bit more than I lose - and that's without canvassing or leafletting.  I even threw in a W/C job at a job agency yesterday because I've been cleaning since April and haven't been paid a penny yet.  It's £95 now owing (it was a tenner a fortnight with outside only on one occasion when there was no access).  I hope I don't have to mess around with small claims but will if I have to.  I suspect cock up rather than conspiracy but next month, I will start the reminder letters process.

Sorry to hijack thread, but Matt, just had a butchers at your site..  do you think this would be a good way to start over to wfp:www.emwc.uk.com/Details.asp?ProductID=50

It's a 50 gpd.

Is there a cheaper option, and how long do these last for?

135 quid for that is too much

ive used a 60 or 75 GPD for over 3 years, i only did upstairs with WFP , which is a good way to start and gets the customers used to the system ( i have started to do a few of my area's WFP up and down now, but its been a few years and they are used to the system and accept it )

to compare prices of yours, here is a RO MAN

w ww.ro-man.com/shop/product_info.php/cPath/22_90/products_id/258

75 GPD with pre-filters and a small DI cartridge for 74 quid

where as the 100 GPD is 110 quid

w ww.ro-man.com/shop/product_info.php/cPath/22_91/products_id/34

if you have the RO running all the time, i find my 100 GPD does me, its on 24/7 into rain water butts, works well for me as i didnt want a massive IBC tank looking all ugly at me

as for how long they last, they will last aslong as any RO unit, the prefilters will last 3 - 6 months ( they only cost a few quid each ) and if you flush the RO will last you 3 years +

I lost plenty at the start of this year. Back to a full round now. Lost one last week 'cause I charged him a cancellation charge which he paid but got a letter cancelling which to be honest I half expected (he'd messed me around 3 times) so I'm not bothered and picked up 3 new ones today and all because the sun was out for a rare occurance this month. I don't worry about losing customers anymore, had my fair share and still back to normal and that's all in a recession. :)

You have to be a bit thick skinned about it. If you worried too much you drive yourself into a real depression.

However, I expect to get a few more before long. They are only talking about the bills going up at the moment, most people haven't actually had any bigger heating bills land on the mat yet.

In fact, most people haven't even got their heating on in August, it will be after Christmas that the effects start to hit home.

we are trying to build our round and find you gain three and lose one . the best thing about it is the ones you lose always seem to be the pains in the arse ones. customer who had to cancel us 12 months ago cos she was made bankrupt phoned this week to see if we could start doing her again. things like that pick you up a bit . getting a few not this time , but that happened last year and is usually due to holidays and only seems to happen once a year so not too bad. as long as its still building we will remain positive (i hope).

I found that in the real early days. i have learned to let it go in one ear and out the other. i don't dwell on it at all, just keep pushing forwards.

I always check up if someone complains though, had one yesterday complaining they couldn't see the benefits and that their windows were still dirty...yep you guessed it, the insides were minging and not one problem on the outside. these customers make me laugh and i had much pleasure in telling her so last night! ;)
