 ::)We have a job to do in a couple of weeks. A commerical customer had a fire next door and they have asked us to go in and clean their carpets. I haven't seen the job yet but I've been told it smells of smoke. At the moment they are stripping out the ceiling tiles and are going to redecorate. Then we are coming in to clean the carpets. Removing smoke damage isn't something we've done a lot of so any hints or tips would be useful.

how well the carpet comes up, will depend on how bad the fire was , also what
type of fire the customer had , was it a dry risidue fire,a protein fire etc etc.
was a emergency pre clean done with- in 24 hours.
the longer smoke odor and soot molecules stay in contact with a surface the more difficult it will be to remove.
the removal of the ordors may be very hard indeed, the customer may keep smelling this for a long time. please stress this to the customer.

Can you get in sooner rather than later and do a pre clean to remove as much of the smoke damage before the building work is carried out?

Otherwise there is a risk that the carpets will be trashed by them with further smoke damage to the carpets along with builders grit,dust and rubbish making your job almost impossible.

If you can get in and pre clean you can remove most of the harmful acids from the fire that are lying in the carpets along with the soiling.Then when they have finished  the decorating etc you go back and finish the job and restore the carpet.

If you have never done this type of work before you might want to ask someone who has to go along with you as sometimes is difficult to know where to start.

The builders are going to rip out the bad, then replace with new, whilst walking all the extra debris into the smoke damage carpet.
Ever cleaned up after builders, not tidy are they!

You need to visit the job, asap. The carpet may be beyond restoration anyway.
Once you have seen the condition of the carpet you can then decided.
A good vacuuming and dust sheets are needed. These are not words builders understand!!!

Reading your post a dissension has been made before an evaluation rip out and renew and claim of next door so why call you in at a later date? Or are they testing you?

Thank you all for your comments so far.

We have been to look at the carpet the carpet are tiles. 44 sq  yards.

The room had not been opened for a few days, when we went in the room

I could personly not smell smoke. The fire was just before Christmas. 

They are going to get it all decorated and replace the ceiling tiles. We will then clean the carpets.

We have explained to them that we cannot guurantee that we will be able to remove all the smoke damage which they are happy with what we have told them.

The comment from John Flynn connected with IICRC Fire Restoration course, I agree with you that would be somethink for the future but at this point I would rather go on a leather cleaning course to help me develop that side of the business.

Smoke damage is not somethink that would usually undertake but as we have done work for the company before and I feel the smoke damage is not too bad it is somethink that I will be willing to undertake.

Chemspec have some amazing products for fire damage and smoke damage products.  if you want a brochure and a price list call me on 01239 621821.  we recently used their smoke odour sealer on some walls and it is fantastic.  honestly not a hard sell here, anyone who has used chemspec products will tell you thay are excellent.
