300gpd RO V Merlin
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:56:56 pm »
Apart from the speed of fill, what advantages/disadvantages is there to having a merlin opposed to an 300gpd RO system.

A mate of mine will be using around 500ltrs per day, he'll have a 1000ltr IBC Tank in his garage.

His water pressure is the same as mine at around 30psi he will have a booster pump to boost it to around 75psi and his TDS is 120ppm.

Apart from water charges, what is the cost of running a merlin ie filters etc.

I need to get the above answers back to him over the week-end so he can place his order, this guy is 60 years old and I would like to see him and his mate off there ladders.

Hi Jeff.

Is he bothered about the amount of waste water?

Also the pump you will need for a Merlin isn't the sameas one for the 300. The merlin needs a lot more water input. Do you know what the pump is?  Either RO is going to need one.

At a TDS of only 120 there is nothing in it in running costs really The pumped 300 will give a LOT less waste and a better TDS out but as I say at 120 in the difference in resin costs will be minimal.

Really it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other in this case.

Andrew

if he's on a water meter then the 300gpd system will be a little bit cheaper to run, however the merlin will produce 500ltrs in about 4hrs with a good booster pump so will produce water much faster in an emergency (if he forgot to filter water the night before)

I just phoned him to see if he's on a water meter, but his phone is still engaged ::)

in the meantime he will not need to use his booster pump 30 psi is the lowest pressure a merlin can run on

Thanks Guy's its looking like the merlin will be his best option then.

Does anyone know the price difference between the filters of both systems.

40 psi is the recommended minimum for a merlin, any lower and there will be more waste water than usual.but if he isnt worried about the waste (which is minute compared to the millions of gallons leaking from the water boards pipes around the country!)then a merlin is far simpler. How far will the merlin be from the water supply? the further it travels down a garden hose the greater the resistance and therefore the pressure going into the merlin will be less than the pressure leaving the kitchen tap.clear as mud so far, but ime going to lie down now.  8)Syd

Hi Jeff, just thought i say what my merlin is giving me at the mo... At 54 psi it produces 1.2 ltr a min at 30 tds. Waste is 4 ltr a min. Tap tds in is 221 and waste around 300. I have the out put from the Merlin running through a very small DI which came with my ro-man. Found the ro-man was really slow could have added more pre filters but decided to go for quantity. Over all in your friends situation Merlin should be faster overall but i think the tds would be higher and you will need to di the water as it is stored or at point of use. poss both!
As andrew said not much in it and get the right pump they are not cheap as you may know.
Spend a bit more on bits and bobs too quality parts last soo much longer, plastic connectors break quite easily.

Good luck

Regards

Paul

He will have a booster pump fitted and his tap is around 15' away from where the system will be set up.
Looking at all the replies I have had regarding the merlin, it does look like his best option, especially for the expansion side of things.

He will have a booster pump and I see the quote includes a full 4.6ltr DI vessel.
I have now emailed him as I still can't get through on the phone, I have suggested he takes the quote he has had.
He's had a very good price from James of X-line with a very good list of parts.
