Contacted 3M about scotchgard, got strange reply
« on: July 16, 2008, 12:28:21 pm »

I have just purchased some 3M scotchgard

As a lot of the other stain protection manufacturers supply sales litterature which can be very useful when selling the product to a customer
I sent an enquirey to 3M to ask if they supplied litterature for this product - below is a copy of the e mail I sent and the reply.

I am enquiring as to weather 3M have any litterature that is suitable for customers for the 3M scotchgard fabric protector.

I am a carpet and upholstery cleaner and noticed other brands of fabric protection come with sales litterature that is excellent to give to the
customer after a cleaning service.

Is there any such litterature available for this product?

Many thanks

Paul James

Dear Mr James,

Unfortunately we do not provide literature for this market segment.

The rationale behind this decision is that the only product available via
prochem is a 'top up' treatment only and therefore does not give the level
of repellency and protection that our manufactured product provides and
therefore we would not want to confuse our end users.

Im sorry that I cannot be of any further help in this matter,

Best Regards,

Sue Poole

I found this reply strange, almost sounds like they don't believe in the product.

Paul

Thats not very reassuring. Prochem offer this as a concentrated and have application instruction pdf on thier website, which gives instruction for new and freshly cleaned carpet

sounds to me like prochems is a watered down version and you can't get the good stuff unless you are accredited by 3M

That is strange. I once used some Scotchgard purchased from them and after application the custys carpets had black dots all over it. Cleaned up ok and applied again but same thing happened so cleaned again and advised custy that it would be better not to do it on third attempt and then the carpet was fine.

By the way, the protector I get from John Kelly is excellent and can be applied dry.

I SPOKE TO A REPRESENTATIVE from 3M a couple of weeks ago.

The gist was they are only importing it to stop others importing from US and cutting out 3M UK.

Prochem have the sole distributer license.

They said it is a top up because for some reason they want to protect their carpet mill applied product.

However it is the US formulation and is sold there as a full protector and the application leaflet mentions nothing about top ups so i would not worry to much.

Prochem were vague but said the leaflet explained what the product was.

Don't worry about it. 3M are just protecting their main market which is furniture and carpet retailers. They wouldn't want them thinking Joe Bloggs carpet cleaner can apply the same stuff they are charging extortionate amounts for. Politics I'm afraid.

I think thats probably it John, I have a friend who works for DFS, the furniture place and they are tied in with 3M treatments, the sales guys have intensive training for selling the protector and they make more comission on selling the protector as an add on as they do from the sale of a piece of furniture.

Have just recieved a second e mail after asking them to clarify - copy of e-mail below:

Dear Paul,

Apologies I obviously didnt explain myself adequately.

I am referring to the treatment which is applied in the mills directly onto
the wool and then dried in an industrial oven.

This product is the main core of the UK Scotchgard business and can only be
used in the carpet manufacturing process.

In regards to your product this can only be used if the carpet has been
previously treated with a 'protector' and therefore builds onto the
original protection.

I hope that this clears any confusions caused by my previous e-mail

Best Regards,
Sue

they don't mention that to us at point of sale for this product.

John is right - Politics

DFS use Guardsman Paul (national contract that they have had for donkeys), they offer the stain protection and sell the associated policy that comes with it. Safeclean deal with all the callouts to try and remove the accidental spills.

As I understand it complete protection is only achieved when the Scotchgard has cured. According to 3M the only way to cure it totally is by in plant heat treatment and the product on sale from prochem should only be used as a ‘top up’ procedure

Yes  but i would assume any type of protector applied under factory conditions would be superior ,

Does this mean all protectors we sell  are " Top ups"

All i can say is the application leaflet mentions nothing about "Top up" neither do any US sites i can find, Have a look at Jon Don or 3M USA it is the same product Prochem are selling.

This was a can of worms opened by Peter Reed, a few years back. He wanted to apply to be 3M certified .......... he was told , by 3M, that no UK approvals had been given for years and that people stating they were 3M Approved, were living on past record and not current.
Has that changed in the 2 years since it was brought up  ???

Pete Sweeney,
Hi Pete, those black spots are caused by little drips from the sprayer. They are little concentrated spots and as such never really dry out, causing rapidly appearing  black spots as they attract soil, dust etc. They clean up easy enough, but any drips from the sprayer will cause black marks to appear. Same thing happened to me when I was licensed by 3M to apply Scotchgard many years ago.
