Have I done damage????
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:41:35 pm »
Hi

I did a job today on a first floor block of flats in the hallways and the only way I could fill up was with a hose pipe through the window anyway I was filling up my machine and I got distracted and it started to overflow so I think water was sucked into the machine and then it started to spit out a little bit of water do you think I have damaged the vacs?

Thanks

Fred

 :D  OOPS!

What machine is it?

Did the water get in to the case and onto the motors etc?  First thing to do is flip it open and have a good look inside, towel dry anything that looks damp.

Presuming the electrical stuff isn't wet on the outside (risk of arcing and taking everything out) if you've had water through the system and spitting out the exhaust, the best thing to do is just leave the motors running for a couple of minutes.  The heat and airflow will soon deal with any moisture that's got into them.

The worst thing you could do is just turn it off and leave it standing, as you'll be risking leaving water sitting in the motors.

plug it in, turn it on.

if it runs you've done no harm, its it goes bang you need new motors.

this might sound a bit flippant but its the best advice you'll get ;)

I have a Ninja I think it only went down the back sides not near the controls. I did run the vacs for about 5 minutes  with the top off. So do you think it will be ok I dont want to take it to Ashbys.

Ahhh then I can speak as an authority, having thrown water at the top of my ninjas many a time and only succeeded in creating a waterfall down the outside  ::)

These machines are very well designed in terms of preventing water getting to the electrics.  Unless you chucked it in a river you'll be fine :)

My ninga is always outside when cleaning rain or shine,  these are fine to get wet.

Just to reiterate, always use an RCD when using an extraction machine. Water and electrics done mix.

My machines have never been anywhere near Ashby's since they rolled off the production line!

Most common thing that will need replacing (depending on how you use/abuse the machine) will be the QD on the front.  Just flip the lid up (I have a custom designed beer crate to rest it on :)), get a spanner on the inside to hold it steady, then simply unscrew the fitting and stick the new one on (don't forget a few turns of PTFE tape on the male thread).

Next most common thing will probably be a vac motor.  It's like a Lego set, very obvious.  Just make sure that you re-seal the exhaust hose to the rear motor if you change it.  I like to drill a couple of holes in the motor's outlet port (making sure no swarf gets inside) and fix the hose to it with pop rivets.  I stick a nice big dollop of silicone sealant in there to make it airtight and leave it over the weekend if possible.

Buy yourself a crimping set and some bullet connectors.

The pump is a bit of a cow to change, mainly because of the hose spigots, but it's still do-able without a trip to Kent :D

I've only ever had one cooling fan give up the ghost, you could give that job to a 3 yr old child it's so simple.

Never had an element go, never had a thermocouple wire go but these are all just remove/clean away gunky old sealant/replace with new sealant type of jobs.

Don't be afraid, just have a play with it, you can't really screw anything up worse if it's already broken can you ;)

Cos you're not a SM franchisee!

The pumps and motors are generic anyway, they're Lamb Electric heavy duty 3-stage motors and Shurflo pumps, lots of suppliers stock them but shop around because there's a bit of a difference in price.
