Last time I changed my pre-filters was 03/05/08
Had a look at one of them today and the one I could see through was minging.
Getting green etc.
The RO does work hardish I suppose as I need to produce around 1800 litres a day for the five working days of the week.
Should they be shooting so quickly (under 2 months?)
I am aware they should be changed regularly (3months)
and yes I do flush daily 20 mins or so.
Just worried how the membrane is??
Any advice appreciated

Hi Russ.

Is your RO getting sunlight on it?

If it is then that is why your prefilter is turning green. If you are using 10 inch filters you are probably better changing the set every 6 to 8 weeks. They are pretty cheap for a complete set.

Hi Russ round our way I'd recommend a water softener as well, especially with the amount of water that you are knocking up.

By the way do you do any work in Heaver close, just up the road from you on the Betts farm estate, got a referral that is out of my area if you want it.

I have 20 inch pre-filters
and yes a little sunlight does get through.
Is there anything I can use to stop this happening?
apart from the obvious-moving it inside.
How about wrapping pre-filters with black bin liners or something similar.
Thought I paid about £40 last time for pre-filters so don't really
want to change 6 weekly if I can avoid it.
Could this all be damaging the membrane?

I am very well.  Thank you for asking.

Keeping sunlight off will help to avoid the green stuff building up. At £40 a set they are either very high quality or a bit expensive. At your rate of production it is very important to change them in good time or your membrane will be damaged by chlorine.

Simon has given very good advice as well. If your water has a high calcium content a softener is a must. They take the calcium out of the water. I have seen 40 inch membranes ruined in less than 3 to 6  months by calcium build up despite regular flushing. You will also benefit by using less DI resin with a softener because you will get a lowwer TDS reading from your RO. Softeners do work well.

Andrew, how do you know the water has got a high calcium content?
