They tried to steal my details
« on: June 28, 2008, 01:22:14 am »
Tonight I posted a topic on banking on line, a couple of guy's mentioned going through paypal, so tonight I began to set up an on-line payment sceme for my customers, half way through I decided against it as I'm no big fan of paypal.
10 minutes after logging out of my paypal account I recieved an email and this is what it said.

Dear PayPal Member,

Now because I was only half way through applying for on-line payments and then decided against it, I could have easily thought this was a genuine email.
I forwarded the suspect email to paypal and this was there reply.

Dear ,

Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
The email you forwarded to us is a phishing email, and our security team
is working to disable it.

-------------------------
What is a phishing email?
-------------------------
Phishing emails attempt to steal your identity and will often ask you to
reveal your password or other personal or financial information. PayPal
will never ask for your password over the phone or in an email and will
always address you by your first and last name.

Take our Fight Phishing Challenge at
www.paypal.com/fightphishing to learn 5 things you should know
about phishing. You'll also see what we're doing to help fight fraud
every day.

-------------------------
You've made a difference.
-------------------------
Every email counts. By forwarding a suspicious-looking email to
spoof@paypal.com, you've helped keep yourself and others safe from
identity theft.

Thanks,

The PayPal Team

So take care guy's, if you recieve an email like this dont follow the link but go into your account in your usual way.

Jeff I get at least 10 emails a day saying about payments etc from paypal.

The best top for anyone reading this is only every log in with paypal if you typer in www.paypal.com this means you are on there site, dodgy people clone address in email looks the same but it not.

as said type it ion yourself every time, never from any link in an email and you are 99% protercted.

It was funny it was 10 minutes after closing my paypal account when I was half way through applying for card payments, that I had the email.

Another thing that made me suspicious  was the fact that there grammar was incorrect.

I never log onto any account from a link sent in an email.

Go and change your password, and check what email address's are on your paypal account the reason I say this is because all a fraudster has to do is ad another email address in your account checking that is a good idea always better to be safe than sry.

Another coincidental thing happened this morning? but this one is genuine

The Boss banks with Naf-West and through the post she received what looked like a little calculator after reading the destruction manual its another security device for on-line banking.

What happens is when you bank or purchase anything on line, you will be asked for a random code, you stick your card into this little reader and it will generate the code for you but only when you have entered your pin into the machine.

I thought I would test it by sticking my own card into it (not naf-west) but it spit my card out, you also have to use it if you want to set up anything new with your on-line banking, ie set up a standing order etc.

If Naf-west are doing this, you can be sure other banks will follow suite.

Hi Jeff
I have a business account with Natwest and have had this calculator for about 6 months and i seems a good way of protecting you account even if it can be a bit long winded when changing BACS payments in online banking

Thanks Karl
I don't mind it being long winded if it helps to protect her details, Looks like they gave it to business customers before adding it to the domestic market, they said it will Automatically  become active within the next 21 days, or if she wanted to, she could go on-line and activate it now, so i think I'll activate it now for her.
