Need a van for about £1000
« on: June 22, 2008, 08:00:49 pm »
I am working out of the car at the moment with barrels and a Shurflo backpack. This was fine to get started with and served me well. I now have about 250 monthly large 3 bed semis and am finding that I can’t get through them all with my current setup. I can only fit 7 barrels in the car and use about 20 liters per house. This means I am loosing time in getting pole out of car, filling the backpack, carting backpack around house and having to come home in the middle of the day for more water. I believe it is costing me upto an hour a day.

Add to that, I would use a higher flow rate and have the windows done faster if I had more water then I am probably loosing more time. However, I also have commitments like a hefty mortgage so don't have very much disposable at the moment. It's like a catch 22, I don't have the cash because of my work method but can't change that without cash.

So... I have about 1k in a 'sky is falling down' account and would like something I can fit on the drive and that would take a 500 ltr tank. Am I asking the impossible?

stick with the car untill you can aford a better van. i put away in my 1st year for tax knowing i was putting more than i'd need. in april when the bill came in i had 3000 to spend. got a lovely kangoo with an uprated payload to 800kg for just 2500. its worth it dont rush in to it. an hour is only an hour. you will make it up.

biggest reason for business to fall early is trying to run b4 they can walk so ive been told.

sound advice there.

I would say though that the longer you put it off the more it is costing you in what you turnover each month.

I would seriously look at hp, no outlay, ok you will have repayments but you will easily cover them by taking on some more work - doing this will give you the push needed.

I'm in the same boat as you mate, exactly same set up, but hanging on for a van, just got hold of a 7 seater Ford Galaxy that i'm gonna use with back seats taken out, till I get sorted.

And 20 litres a house???? sure the backpack only holds 17 litres and I get about 3 houses out of that!!
HOWAY THE LADS!!!!

Thanks guys. I hadn't though of a dispatch.

As for holding on, I am in a position of not being able to save any more unless I do something about the way I work.

The houses I do are big though with double bays at the front. If I used 5 ltrs it would look like I had never been there.

I,m sure all of us on the line have had to borrow either from the bank or family etc to push your business forward , this is your answer.

Fiat Scudo Ciroen Dispatch,or Peugeot Expert, are all the same van, these are classsed as midi vans, bigger than the likes of a Berlingo but smaller than a Transit. Another line to think about is a small trailer, I have a 3ft6 sq aluminium bodied trailer , it holds 12x 25l barrells and my trolley on top, this is the smallest in the range but they do go bigger , mine would cost about £200 from halfords. Its always an option to follow for a temporary period until such times that you can afford a newer van, and you'll have no trouble selling the trailer when you're finished with it
Cheers Rich

Was interested in the second van on Alex's list, however, after a quick HPI check -

Insurance Write-off This registration was recorded as a Category C write-off on 1 Sep 2006

Although at £900 (it didn't sell and was relisted for £900) if I get a garage to look it over and they give it the ok, is it such a problem?

i have emailed the seller asking if it has even been involved in an accident. Interested to see if he tell sme the truth.

My thoughts exactly.
