Police pulled me over a few days ago because he could see my van was sitting low, on the way to work with full tank of water.

I had been to a public weighbridge some time ago with full tank and came in 30kg under the limit - but only had 1/4 tank fuel.

Explained this to the policeman and showed him the readings I had written down for 1. front axle load, 2. rear axle load, 3. total vehicle weight.
He checked this against the max loads given on the vehicle plate and after thoroughly checking vehicle - tyres,looked under at suspension, saw how tank was secured -  he let me go.

He said he was impressed I had van checked at weighbridge myself, otherwise he would have taken me to a weighbrige.

All the crimes going on in this country and they pull you over for possibly (incorrectly ) being overweight :

overloaded or not - the handling characteristics of cars, vans etc is affected more by road conditions than what you're carrying.

driving when tired is much more serious than overloading yet there's no fine for that

Of course it's a serious offence, but how many people have died directly as a cause of someone having an overweight vehicle, as opposed to someone having a knife or gun.
Yes both serious offences but I know which one I'd take my chances with

Wasn't trying to have a dig. Been wfp over 2 years and never expected to get weight-checked by police. Just trying to alert others to possibility and that it is viewed as a serious offense.

Ok then, let me re-phrase, do you think the police should just ignore all traffic laws then in favour of gun and knife crime?

I'm not trying to stir mate, I just think its hilarious when peolple get pulled etc for drink driving, speeding or some other dangerous thing that can and does kill people and they say "why don't you go and catch some real criminals" which is basically what you just said.

If an overweighted vehicle overturns on the motorway because its unstable, that can kill people no problem.  If you dont agree with the law, well thats one thing and its your right.  But the police dont make the law, they enforce it, so why have a go at the police for doing their job?
