i'm thinking of running my scudo overweight short term.

does anyone know if you get a fine or points or whatever for getting caught?

Taken from a website:

Trading Standards and the police enforce the laws relating to overloaded vehicles.

You can break the law if:

you carry a heavier load than your vehicle is designed to hold, or you have an uneven load causing one (or more) of the axles to bear too much weight. Most vehicles are fitted with a data plate which specifies the load they can safely carry. Don't forget to allow for the additional weight of the driver and passengers.

Are You the driver?
Do you know that you are liable to prosecution if you drive an overloaded vehicle?

The legislation imposes fines of up to £5,000 for each offence; that is each overloaded axle plus any overloading on total weight. These fines can be imposed on you. It is not just your employer and/or the owner of the vehicle who may be liable. There is every possibility that if an overload is detected you will be prosecuted. You may also get 3 penalty points on your drivers licence.

dave I would strongly advise against running overweight.

dangerous and as andrew has pointed out can be punished very severely.

Dave I cant believe you just said you are thinking of running your van overweight, the law is there for a reason! brakes, steering etc do not react as well, you will be a danger on the road, you may as well just say i think im going to drink drive tonight!!
 A couple of years back i unknowingly drove someones truck overweight i was stopped read the riot act was told all the reasons why not to overload and cautioned as it was my 1st offence, next time they will throw the book at me, i think the fines run into thousands so DONT DO IT!!

One of the local window cleaners vehicles had an accident a few weeks ago. It crashed for no apparent reason, just left the road on a bend. It transpires it was overweight. The police were interested (dont know the outcome yet) and their insurance is invalid.  Its not worth it is it?

A friend of mine in a Ford P100 got fined £600,  about 10 years ago on the motorway. Overloaded with slabs I think.

I couldn't be botherered with the hassle myself but someone did have the idea of a dump mechanism in case of a problem. Don't know how it would work.

Solenoid operating a tap on the side of the tank to a hose through the floor - used from the drivers seat.

Scene:-

Police Officer: Follow me to the DoT weighbridge as I reckon you're overloaded.
You:- Yes officer, (hitting switch) right away officer! Dither about and lose water which stops when you hit the switch again.

Of course this would be totally wrong and not contemplated unless you are a complete muppet!

I only suggested that there had been a previous post. I have no need to do this type of thing and if I did I wouldn't have discussed it on here. I know a couple of good mechanics, who would no doubt know how to do it.

You'll get a slap on the wrists and maybe a £30 fine. Someone i know got pull and taken to a weighbridge and this was the result less than 3 months ago.
