why not look at contract lease. about £250 + vat p/m for a Nissan Primastar. Initial payment of about £750 (or 3 times monthly payments). AA package, road fund paid, 10k miles p/a, 3 years man warranty, 100% tax deductable.
All it costs you on top is tyres and servicing. 3 years trouble free motoring.
I bought a 53reg trafic 18mths ago for £7000, already had new clutch, track rods, about £500 worth of work and a week or so off the road and only had 30k on the clock.

Just my two pennyworth's, if  you go for a contract hire, why not look at the new partner scudo, dispatch range, they are quite a good price most with a 1200kg!!! payload and 2 cargo doors.  Thats higher than the traffic primastar vivario offering.

Hi-ace are a grea van, only problem is they get boring as they never break down. Vivaro/primastar/traffic- new ones are pretty good but at your budget the gearboxes are iffy. Transits on your budget might be too old so you might want to stick with the transporter

Just done my first year in my Trafic. Bought it with 60K on the clock on an 04 plate. Spent just £100 on it for a new pedal sensor which put me off the road for a half a day. Not bad I reckon.

I have two tanks in the van with a combined capacity of a 1050 litres so I carry some serious weight, but it never shows any problems of taking the weight. I bought the 2.9 tonne version which gives you an extra payload of 1200 kg. I would also try & make sure to get the 6 gear model as it has about 20 more BHP.

If you want a Vivaro/Trafic/Primastar, £4,500 would probably only buy one from the dodgy gearbox era.  This is a very real problem with these vans (mine went at 39,000 miles).  I would suggest either using that £4,500 as a good deposit on a much newer one or looking at another type of van altogether.  This is not to say that you will have a gearbox problem if you buy a slightly older one but they are very prone to this fault.

I was in exactly the same situation 12 months ago. I set myself a budget of around 5K & to be honest it's not enough for the size of van we need. You either get newish vans that have over 100K on them or else older vans (X, Y, 01, 02 Reg) that have average mileage which still takes them to 70 or 80 K.

I decided that I had no choice but spend the extra & I'm glad I did. My van cost £7000 after the dreaded VAT & so far it's been worth every penny.

The other thing which I found a waste of time was trying to buy a van with no VAT. You end up buying either privately which has it's risks or buying from dodgy car dealers who advertise on Autotrader with just a mobile number. Drove 60 miles to look at a Vito, got there & quickly realised this guy was a gypsy, no thanks!!!

anyone use a ford connect if i went for a 230 900kg payload could fit a reasonable tank in it. the garage i use said to said to stay away from vivaro/primastar/traffic because of gearbox problems  also new transits not much good either what age do the vivaro vans get better? he also said the vitos are full of very expensive problems so this leaves me at trying to find a transporter this van is top of the list problem being finding one as everyone thinks that their van is great even when its got 100000+ miles on the clock and still want top money usually well out of my budget

I did read (on here I think) that the gearboxes were to a better standard from 55 reg onwards.  Please don't take my word for that because I'm only quoting what someone else wrote and I've no idea of how reliable the info is.

go for a toyoto, 4K should get you a LWB or SWB on an 03/53 plate, but on that plate you wont get the 120bhp, only the 95bhp

No gimmicks, basic looks, lot of van for your money
