Gutters with mesh over them... nightmare
« on: April 24, 2008, 04:20:31 pm »
One place where gutter vacuums are hopeless is where there is some kind of mesh, plastic usually, over the gutter. Presumeably designed to keep out large leaves.

However it also lets in small seeds and these wait until you have cleared the crap out with your vacuum and then sprout - about now with the sunshine.

I have just had to refund £100 on account of this (felt morally obliged to) as her gutters have a nice array of plants growing in them.

So be warned, gutter vacs don't work with mesh in the way.

i dont know why people bother with gutter mesh
imo its crap
a great "matrix" for plants to grow thru ,moss to form round etc.
so far i have persuaded 6 customers to take it off
all except one had a lot less crap trapped in the gutter next time i did em (anything from a year to 18 mths later)

Use a pressure washer and blow the gutter guards out the way or use a gutter rake to lift them out of the way. Where there's a will, there's a way. Get the customer to fit the guards back at their inconvenience, lol

Thats the good thing about ladders you can just remove the mesh clean the gutter then put the mesh back.

I think gutter vacs are probably a great tool but like all other tools they have there limits.

I won't be getting one though the gutters i clean in a year i can count on my hands

Just had a phone call from the custy saying she's going to tear up my refund cheque to her and she thinks I did all I could in the circumstances.
She's going to get someone to come in and remove the mesh for ever and clear the crud out adn it will be a yearly job.

best solution, the stuff is a waste of time
serves no purpose at all as far as i can see
imo those little mesh gaurds that fit in downpipes aint much better ::)
mind you i did make some once for a customer(didnt actually charge but got a good tip for it :))
