Hi all

A customer phoned me today to ask me how to remove cigarette smoke from feathers. Apparently, she has inherited a Habitat sofa which reeks of smoke. She has successfully washed the loose covers, but the feather filled seat and back cushions and the padded frame still pong.

She tells me that she has a friend from east Germany whose job it was to remove and wash feathers from pillows, clean them, then restuff and resew the pillow. Sounds a bit drastic to me!

I'm not in the fire restoration game, but I'm thinking that a fogger might be the answer? Any help and advice is much appreciated.

Sounds like she already has the answer to her question

She needs YOU to go along and clean the padded frame and the inner linings of the seat and back cushions[feathers dont hold much odour]in your normal way with an added smoke and odour neutraliser.
On completion of cleaning apply a light application of smoke and odour neutraliser and leave to dry.

Good advice from Colin as the smoke will be in the flock, it may need a couple of applications after the clean so make sure you account for the extra visits in the price.

Odour neutraliser of some kind,personally I use  Nemesis Odour Neutraliser.

Spray the whole sofa, cushions,padding the whole lot then wrap it in plastic and leave for a couple of days till dry then re-check.I used this method on a cat urine soaked chair and it only took one application.

Good idea Steve, I have never thought of wraping it in plastic. One for me to try next time.

Good advice so far, also take off the bottom dust cover and spray the inside with a suitable deodouriser. Nicotine permeates everything and leaves a tar like substance on the fibres.

Hi there,

If you have access to a ozone generator then this is very effective on smoke odour removal.

Like your strap line. It reminds me of a similar one I know:-

I've always been conscious of my faults.....all two of them......And one of them is modesty!

Certainly can't apply it to myself!
