I am using water with a high TDS  (450-500)and high calcium.
Does anyone know if a water softener will make a difference and will it have any adverse effects or will it prolong the life of my 4040 RO.
The softener is a salt based one by Liff.

Not sure as I've got an ion exchange resin softener (you can buy this resin from cleaning spot and fill a standard vessel with it)

It just needs backwashing with salt now and again to recharge it.

I think its supposed to make the whole purifying procedure run more efficiently, therefore reducing work on RO.

I'll probably get 100#'s of replies telling me how wrong I am now!!  But I think thats pretty much it!

A water softener will make a difference and will prolong the life of membrane just has to be installed right, something I am posting about at the mo, I have a 4040 and tds of 479.

how do mean 'installed right'.
The one i getting is about the size of a large aerosol can with 15mm fittings and one way flow, it has small bead things in it which you change when they are spent and it also carries salt.
I was intending to fit it in-line directly before sediment filter and just attach my hose straight to it.
Does that seem about right or should i get a pro to fit it

I have a vessal (same as di, blue one) I have a filter housing and the connections to fit, a bag a sf resin.

I can say if yours is right or worng as I dont know the answer yet, you can do the one I have wrong if connected wrong and dont flush right (will damage membrane) I am trying to find answers :

Someone on here most have same thing.
