when you say online to check what do you mean ?

if you mean as a website address go to www.domainnames.co.uk a do a check for a domain name there these seem to be very upto date with registration unlike alot, or you are welcome to call or email me and I will do it for you my end.

no not website yet, just name for bank to set up company, for example we cant use windowashers as you have it, so if we come up with a name for our buisness do we need to check somewhere to see if it exists already?

I think if the name is your only concern, as long as  there's no one local with the same name and you're not calling yourself ionics or something similar (a big company) it doesn't really matter. things would probably be different if you  were setting up a limited company

It doesn't really matter provided you're only going to be operating in a small locality.

"Reflections Window Cleaning" is registered by Paul J Smith in Somerset, but I've lost count of the number of other "Reflections..........." I've seen around, including several who post on here ::)

If you started trading in the same area as the rightful owner of the name, he/she would probably contact you and demand that you stop.

For example: a second hand shop near me started up, calling itself "'Arrods".  The real Harrods got to hear of it and threatened lega action.  The local shop responded by changing its name to "Not 'Arrods" ;D ;D

You can try this link http://www.start.biz/multi_search.php it has all the registered companies in the uk.  But there are many companies that are not registered.
