Well, put it this way, my expenses for the last two weeks were £500 (van insurance, breakdown cover and a drop of fuel broken pole section). If i go back through the year they are eye wateringly high (poles, van ro etc,etc.) Anyone starting out and leasing a van too would be struggling i'm sure.
 So, as has been mentioned before there is a big difference to running a business and earning a wage.

Each job doesn't cost me anything, they pay me, i can't see what your getting at really.

Your talking materials i guess,if you work it out over the course of the year compared to what you earn if it`s going on each individual house it`s peanuts.

Fair enough your customers do pay you, but the fact of the matter is do you actually know how much your jobs cost to do.

For example cost of materials used for the day, how much fuel you use in the day plus insurances i.e liability and van also accident cover and membership to government recognised bodies i.e FWC (Federation of Window Cleaners)

Once you've worked all this out for the day take that off what you earn for that day and then devide that answer buy the amount of jobs you do for that same day and you should then have come up with a rough guide for how much it really costs you to do a job.

12 sediment @ £3 = £36
6 carbon @ £12 = £72
2 bags of resin = £160
replace all poles/pumps every 3 years = £1000/3 = £333
fuel = £2500
van depreciation and tyres etc = £2000

Total = 5100

we'vegot 2 vans to run so add another 4-5k which seems about right

Ewan- 2 employees (+ wife and me Ltd company)
Cost £36,000 approx
Sat and did this about 1 month ago with accountant and was amazed.
Wages,holiday pay,nat insurance, paye,van insurances,fuel,hp for one van, equipment,accountants ,liability/employee liability insurances + other bits and pieces.

It was helpful to understand the various cost bases and put things into reality.
Put up with alot of hassle (staffing,standard of work,sickies) at the beginning but seems to have settled down now so was worth it.

Depending on what type of work you do i think its hard to make an accurate account of what we earn. Im sure everybodys amount will vary due to amount of vans an staff, insurance , and wfp eqiupment . I remember the days i was happy to earn £200 a week
 but now i need that in my first couple of hours
Most normal people would say window cleaners earn a lot its rite we do but i left the house at 6.30 this morning got home at 5 straight in to the office and only been finished invoicing a hour ago. So for all my hard work its off to tenerife friday morning my son can run the show

Burky-boy- You reap what you so - so you have a good holiday mate sounds as if you work hard for it.

I know what you mean out at 5.30 this morning then home at 3.30 then off to contract clean 5 - 7 then lets not forget the taxi service for the kids (one trampolining and one at brownies.
Early grave springs to mind.

Trying to put a cost on how much you need to earn to break even of make X£ is probably a bettter way
E,G -Have to earn £32 per hour less all costs = £15.00 per hour  earned  gross then less your tax/nat insurance, hope this makes sense

im quite busy i havent got an a break down to hand but you have to think about public liability ins and van insurance resin connectors new poles new hoses, vehicle maintenace(includind tax mot and service and repairs)marketing, petrol, phone bill, uniform, finace(if you needed to get it?)and prob add 10% and you should be about right

Well, it's like this really, traditional window cleaning :

Van Insurance inc breakdown cover £31.15
Public Liability Insurance £5.70
Road Tax £16.50
Diesel £75
No bank charges (A&L Free)
No Accountant
Odd Squeegee off, or rubbers, don't even count that to my monthly.

Then there's the odd van cost, but I do a lot of the servicing myself.
I suppose cost would jump with wfp, but still.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, that I'm totally forgetting, but off the top of my head, that's bout it I guess.
