Which rubbers
« on: February 29, 2008, 04:22:43 pm »
I am currently using Ettore S/S Channel/Rubber but was wondering if anyone thinks the unger or pulex is better.

Ettore are the best but don`t last as long as unger due to them being softer.

I did a rubber test last year.

Instead of posting the link I've just cut and pasted it.
I still stand by the results, and would recommend Ettore without question.

Here it is...

None of them are the quality they used to be.  ::)

I did a test on some popular brands a while back.
My findings were as such...

Based on: How well they slide along the glass.
How easily they "cut" and gets nicks in (durability)
How long they last providing they haven't cut.(longevity)
                 My overall rating.

Marks are out of 10.
All rubbers are the "soft" variety, but I'd imagine the comparison would be similar with "hard".

Ettore    : Slide  9.   Durability 7.   Longevity  8.   Overall  8.5.  :  The best about.  ;)

Pulex     : Slide  6.   Durability 8.   Longevity  6.   Overall  7.     :  Don't last 5 mins.  :-\

SYR        : Slide  8.   Durability 7.   Longevity  7.   Overall  7.5.  :  Not a bad rubber.  :)

(d)Unger: Slide  8.   Durability 5.   Longevity  7.   Overall  6.     :  Vile. Falls to bits.  >:(

So, there you have it...
Ettore best of a bad bunch, but the most expensive.
SYR not too bad, but Pulex is very overrated, and you'll be changing it every 5 minutes. It doesn't cut much, but it goes blunt in a morning.
Unger...slides well, but built like a 1980's Lada Riva.  :-\

Hope this of some interest to someone, it took long enough to type it!

Cheers, Rog.

The key to your findings are because you were using soft rubber. It would also depend on what time of year you did the testing.

Unger hard

Tried others but always keep coming back to them.

Pulex and Ettore dont seem to cut it in coastal areas.

I have one or two bad batches of Unger but still the best

I've often wondered that too.

Lets face it, they're all exactly the same shape.
Strange how some work differently though.

I can't get on with any hard rubbers, they just don't turn corners.

Totally agree with Squeeky, actually on all points, Ettore is definitely the best, but a tad expensive. SYR got good prices, and I really like the feel of them. I felt like Ettore wears a tiny bit quicker, but it's been some time that I've checked it, might have a bit of a different technique now. But yea, Ettore or SYR, safe bet.

Also, with squeegee's, don't use Unger....ever, not even there applicator frames. The Ettore progrip is marvelous, also their Progrip frame hold loaaaads of water. Really much better then the ergotech range of Unger. Yes, me too started out with Unger, but trust me, anything but now.

I dont have trouble with turning , i suppose you get used to a certain type, i cant get on with soft they always seem smeary.

Different strokes for different folks.

hi dave after spending 9 1/2 years working as a machine setter on rubber injection moulding machines & extrusion i can say you are not far off the company i worked for did rubbers for vialeda which was done in 3 types there was 2 soft and 1 hard . the truth is when producing squeege rubbers its not a long job and it can be a poor qualatiy rubber thats used for these which normally would just go in a skip , but the saying was why waste it when it could be used on such as squeegee rubbers , wiper blades etc .
