i took a phone call today

can you clean my windows

yes, i can give you a qoute

Ummmm well, i have spoken to 2 of my bridge club freinds and they said to call you

thats nice, where are you, i wil try and pop over to give you a qoute

well i currently pay £150 for my windows to be cleaned, but im willing to pay more, you come highly recommended and i would like you to come and clean mine

ok, im roughly in that area today, i will pop in

thanks see you soon

i arrive at house, look around a little and wonder what else gets cleaned for 150 quid, its a fair size house with leaded windows, but its nothing more than 3 hours work ( might even be 2 hours )

out comes the lady

Oh hi, your matt i guess

yes, ive come to give you a price

well, my last window cleaner used to charge me £150, im will to pay more to have a 1st class job done, 2 of my bridge club members have said your the man for the job

Well i try to do a good job

Oh you do, your reputation is 2nd to none, they both speak very highly of you

im now getting worried that she has the wrong person

she then goes on to hammer the point home thats she wants to pay more as she wants a good job done, this went on for a while

i then say

how does £175 sound to you, for that i will have plenty of time to do a 1st class job and you will be happy

thats wonderfull

now the last cleaner has taken the rich tax a little far, i added a "more money than sence, please stop asking to pay more " tax on aswell  ::) ::) she really wanted to pay more than 150 quid, it was really amazing

shocking really

we get a good bit of that here, I call it "golf club pricing" but I guess bridge club pricing would work just as well, This is just an opinion but I think its down to vanity, She wants to be able to tell her friends at the bridge table loud enough for everyone to hear , that the lovely man they recommended, came to price her windows and he charged her 175 quid, This would hopefully be followed by some "oohs and aahs" and a few hushed remarks about how big her house must be and she must be loaded to be able to pay that for window cleaning. I have had a few where when I give them the price they look dissapointed, so i quickly add that it would be the same again  for insides ( even though the insides were included in the price I originally quoted) and the look of relief on their faces is great,

I had one toda as well.

It was only thirteen and she wanted to pay 20.

I wish it was 150 though!

Put your price up on a weekly basis.  If she's dumping her current window cleaner because he only charges £150, you need to keep ahead of the game ;D

When I helped my brother out window cleaning a few years ago there was a house that my brother quoted £15 for... But she always insisted on paying him £25!  ???

I would have quoted £200 at least with an opportunity like that!!! anyway if its 3 hours work then £175 is about right!!! I priced a job once at £60, their current window cleaner was charging £8!!! :o  Guess what, I got the job because the other chap was rubbish, but they kept him on as well because they couldn't bring themselves to tell him they had found another cleaner!!!  And for £8 they weren't that bothered, he retired in the end, and he never new I was cleaning them as well, although he must have thought it strange that the windows stayed so clean and the frames and sills were suddenly and mysteriously immaculately clean!!!  ;D

It is true that some people feel that if you pay more you get more and its a sort of status thing.

I just wish I could find a few customers like that. No I don't, I wish I could find a LOT!

One thing I am sure a lot of you have noticed in the past with some of your customers is the ridiculous cars they drive in relation to their needs.

I was at a house yesterday, ordinary house, nice people but they have a £43,000 Mercedes 4x4, 07 reg sitting outside.

The wife only uses it for shopping and taking the kids to school.

Totally OTT.
