buisness account
« on: February 20, 2008, 09:56:20 pm »
do you think they are worth it? i know theres been alot of debate on them

my bank are offerneing a free 18 months trial, wont hurt to give it a go i suppose, thing is i do pay in loads of cheuques, and i see when the 18 months is up its like 65p a cheque. so after ive spent my 50p or so on envelope and stamp if a house was a tenner, its like less than £9 then

someone mentioned it being tax deductable, that to me is appealing, anyway, i can spend money on something other than giving it to tax man is a bonus.

It`s a bit of a rip off if you ask me,i pay in at least 80-100 cheques a month and they charge me for it aswell.i get a sheet from the bank about every couple of months telling me how much it`s cost me,i think it`s normally about £35 each time they inform me.

i wont be bothering unless i get forced into it,my bank manager knows what i use the account for and he said that if chqs are made out in my name then not much they can do anyway, one reason why i carry on as sole trader with no company name :) spose it depends how big you are

If you get into large volumes of cheques they`ll make you change your account, more work banking cheques for you processing them etc you won`t get away with it if you bank a lot of them each month.

There are some free business accounts flying around.  For a long time I used Abbey National (think is just abbey now) which was completely free as long as you stayed in credit.  There was no limit as to how many cheques and cash you could pay in at a particular time.

One slight annoyance though, you cant use the branches, you can only use the cash machines to pay stuff in.  Obviously thats no good if you have a lot of coins.  You can log on online for statements and to check balances etc.

But I found it ok.  I had some customers who like to pay by standing order and I never really liked the idea of giving them my personal bank details.

Also, when I later got commercial constracts that wanted to pay by bacs, it looks a whole lot more pro if you give them the details of your business bank account - even if it is just a free one from the abbey.

With Abbey, it's unlimited cheques for the first year, then restricted to 25 per month then I think it's 50p per cheque (after the first 25)

Free? For how long? No one gives you something for nothing, there's always a catch.
