i have been asked to quote for a new-build nursing home,it has 45 ground floor,44 1st floor and 13 2nd floor windows all the same white pvc with 2 panes per window,i know there are several other wc giving a quote so i would like to go in cheap to get it as its my first-is this type of work too cut-throat to make decent money? i would appreciate some rough estimates to use as guidelines-thanks

Don't go in to cheap, if you do, you will come to resent it and your standards will drop, there by getting a bad name for yourself.

What you need to do is work out what you need to earn per day, then divide this job into that days earnings.

Without seeing it, but with the amount of windows and if there is easy access, it should take 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

That was my thoughts the job sounds like it is worth £100 all day long dont get caught in the trap of underpricing a job just to get it as you will spend the whole time cursing the fact it is underpriced and it only gets worse the more times you do it

i know what u mean about underpricing its a tricky one to get right when theres a few quotes going in but i wouldnt mind doing one a bit cheaper as it could lead on to more and i need  more work.i think it might take about 2-3 hours ill try an take some pictures over the weekend but its 25 miles away-thanks for the replies

Don`t forget with the pole in 3 hours you can do loads of work so if you think it will take you 3 hours at that price it`s well under priced.

hi darren if like u said u need the work .id put in a price of 90 at least .i spect if u ar trad it will take u about 2to 3 hrs on ur own. if its straight forward  i e climbing on roof ext can be time consuming .we done something simler today .nursing home wind not clean for 2 yrs .took 3 of us 1 n half hrs . dont forget the travling .so could tak u bout 5 hrs .good luk let us know how it goes

I found thats lots of my customers dont always go for the cheapest. Best to price for what the job is worth. How can we make a living if everone goes in cheap. The idea should be to promote window cleaners as "specialists" not arthur daly's.

Don't go in too cheap.

 They won't always go with the cheapest. When I started out I picked up two residential homes, one in Dromore the other in Banbridge ( I'm in Belfast) I priced too low, got the work, hated doing it and was glad when the contract ran out after two years.

You mentioned the job is 25miles from where you live, that is aroung 1 1/2 hours downtime every time you go as well.

Also, You didn't mention the frequency of clean which will affect how long it takes


Sounds like a long half day to do this job, so add up  what you want for that then add on an extra 10% for unknown factors eg, access, getting the job signed off, and if you are on a 12month contract inflation.

I've priced too low before as there appeared to be more work to follow.  There wasn't.  I believe that they put it over that way deliberately in order to get a cheaper job.  If my experience is a reasonable guideline, I would say to quote the job as a standalone.

theres a company by me that would do that for around £30 - £35 if there are similar tendering they will be about £40. I,m in the midlands & i know quite a few times this has happened, i once tendered for one contract about 70 + buildings at 35p per window to see & i got 2.

If its monthly you could do it for £55 - £60 & less than 2 hours work, you just need to fill in space of travelling time.

44 * £1.50 = £66
13 * £2.00 = £26

Total          = £137

brings you to the overall rounded up sum of £150

I dont think you can go wrong with that

are you north or south nursing homes generally go for cheapest quote 50p to £1 per window and you still make good money.

i would price it as follows

13*£1.50
44*£1.00
45*£0.50

giving you £87 for what should be no more than 1hr30mins
might want to round it down to £80 rather than round up to £90
as they always go for the lowest quote.the company i work for while
building my own round up use this pricing structure works every time
we currently clean 18 nursing homes on a 2 monthly basis.

thanks everyone,i now have a price worked out which ill give them on monday but as the initial clean is finished i dont think they will need done again for a while so i might have to wait for an answer.nice work if you can get it
