After a serious illness to my laptop the gods at PC World have brought life back again.
Carpet protector How can you tell if a carpet has been stain protected and I don't mean by the water droplet test. A customer who has spent £26/m sq on her carpet is finding that the all signing protector doesn't seem to be working very well with an elderly husband.
Did the water droplet test but that doesn't seem to be totally conclusive as water can still run down between the strands.
So is there a real test to find out if she has been done?

Yes, you send some fibres away to be tested. Cant remember where as its years since I knew.

Beeding test should work if protector has been applied properley. Do you know what protector was apllied to it.

If it was recently protected you would see the difference with a water droplet test, from my experiance.
Untreated - just sink in straight away. Treated - water blobs and rolls about when moved.

Depending on the volume of the yarn and or the type of protector used you will not always get a beading up on the surface  as a sure sign. The only way for sure is a fibre test which would have to be sent to a lab and would not be cheap.

Neil what type of fibre is it and design/weight etc.

or if yarn has been dry spun using a surfactant, then there is no beading and it shoots through to the backing

3m scotchcare services have a test kit for oil and  water repellence but a good simple test is to wet it with a egg cup full of water and then apply a terry towel and blot for 10 secs and see how much moisture is left behind.
Most treated carpet there will be little or none as the water will not penetrate the fiber and is sucked straight back up.
