Customer just phoned to say will you come and have a look at my carpet to see if it will clean.
During the usual questions I ask how old is it, she said over 50 years old  .
Cant wait till tomorrow to see it.
Ive cleaned a few old rugs over the years, but this is defo the oldest carpet.

Got me thinking, who has cleaned the oldest carpet on the forum?

Now we know where you get all your work from Shaun. I bet you even made your horn hat out of paper mache so it was'nt just mktg you saved money on.

Cleaned one once which was laid in 1951.  Customer told
me with great pride.  Wasn't that much different than any other carpet around the edge of the room but in the middle & traffic lanes I felt that I was really only cleaning the backing as nowt else left

Did one a couple of years ago where the elderly lady said it had been laid just before her husband had gone to war and he never came home.

It was in 18" or 2' strips if i remember correctly. Came up a treat so she was really happy.

She made me a bacon sarnie and didnt stop talking about her husband. Never re-married, sad story.

Jason sound like it was broad loom Axminister.
I did one last year that was 30 odd years old, large lounge with broad loom  Ax and the old dear was telling me that when they came to fit it,there was six guys there all day with needles sowing the carpet together.This type of joining still goes on to day but I bet it costs a fortune

I think it was an axminster, pale green patterned and hand sewn as she told me.

She said it cost a fortune then (1940's) so cant imagine what it would cost now!

Bless her it was a real memory of her lost young hubby.

regularly clean these type in old gentlemans club in london  look like they been there for years.......

Funny how decent quality carpet looks good after 40/50/60 years but go to some new builds carpet is ruined after 2!

People who buy that sort of quality don't let their kids throw up on it and the rest, they buy it as a one off purchase never to be changed so they usually look after it better.

I do a few Crossley Sultana carpets, usually older end of customers probably been professionals before they retired but all the jobs I've done with this kind of carpet tend to be older people but they understand that you get what you pay for and that includes getting me to clean their carpets

Well said Shaun, they can relate to you being of similar age .

All joking aside i agree, people bought things to last then as they made a long term investment. Not like nowadays, people change their carpets whan they re-decorate every few years.

Throw away society and all that. Too true.

I do a few Crossley Sultana carpets

The Crossley family bought, and still own and run,  this little house and the village around it and about a squillion acres of land in the 1860īs after making a few bob from carpets.

Hi Dennis,

Is that how they got their money? I never knew that!

Passed one of Lord somerleytons sons down a back lane the other day when driving in his new lamborghini, tried not to splash him with a muddy puddle whilst he had his roof down but to no avail, I couldnt slow down in time! Poor soul .

Quite often clean 50+ year old body carpet, and they do come up a treat
bright vibrant colours, and boy do they give up the dirt easily.
twice i've cleaned 100+ year old rugs, including a massive 28 x 14 foot chinese.
"There were 2 in mothers house, my sister has the other. They were Grandmas"
And i don't think they'd ever been cleaned!
