Can any of you fella`s recommend a good decent pair of warm or even normal
Working socks and where ya get em`? I`ve tried Millets,Army stores,normal
High street shops and mine don`t seem to last a month or less before there`s holes
The size of golf balls in em`.Any help appreciated.

Might seem like a strange question but do you always get the holes by ya big toe? If so, try filing the sharp bits off once you've clipped them. I lifted my big toe nail after a football tackle, when the nail fell off I stopped getting holes in my socks, soon as it grew back, I got holes again. Other than that, I haven't found any decent socks myself, so I'll be looking for other peoples suggestions too.

Phil boy is right. Also if you are using steel toe caps inside the shoe put some tape over the ridge.
You can go cheap, such as sport socks and chuck them. These are cotton and cold.

The cheap poly loop pile thermal socks I suspect you are wearing do hole quickly.

Wool with a loop pile is probablly the best. And you can wear liner socks. This means you wear a thin cotton pair which you change every day, but keep wearing the same thicker pair.

get some sealskinz you can get these from most outdoor places bit pricey at £22 but you get what you pay for .

Sealskins are waterproof socks that are also supposed to be breathable. If you already have gortex boots this is a bit daft and in summer you will be a right stinker.

The army socks or commandos(£4 each approx) are good and have a padded bottom but are a bit warm and shrink if washed hot.They made a cotton version for the gulf war.

Socks that last the longest are nylon the best known being indestructable made by HJ Hall. Wolsey now owned by matalan are the other great british sock maker.

Meindl socks, padded and warm. £14.00 a pair, but well worth it. I also wear the Meindl army leather hiking boots in the winter.

It`s about the only place I hav`nt tried for socks.

not one mention of summer in this topic . just good working socks . i assumed it was for this time of year . i dont stink either with wearing gortex boots and sealskin socks my feet are real warm pal .

The matalan equivilant of Alex's socks would be wilson sport socks.

We live in a disposable society Lewis. The like's of mr's g no longer set aside one night a week for darning and sewing buttons on.

The best socks, and the most comfortable, but not the warmest are probably the speckled hj cotton walking socks.

i've been using m&s socks for years now and i haven't worn a hole in the toe yet. The elasticated bit around the top is the 1st thing to go though. Followed by a thinning of the heel. But it takes quite a while.

I must say though,I ain`t gonna pay £22 for a pair of socks.At the
Same time I `ve never gone in for those 10 pairs for £2.50p. special
Offer `thingys`.When I`m passing Matalans I`ll call in and see what
They have.A year ago I`d about 12 pairs.Now I`ve about 3 I think.
That’s just working socks.
