clean, condition & 'scotchguard'
« on: February 01, 2008, 04:43:28 pm »
I get a monthly booklet put in my letterbox, it has a really nice advert for a leather cleaning company offering;

your leather suite cleaned, conditioned & Scotchguarded for £49

can you get a scotchgaurd for leather?

you can get a protector
and as people recognise Scotchguard as a protector (albeit for carpets), this business is "selling" the idea

Hopefully it is a slip of the tongue, just like people saying they are going to 'hoover' the carpets ........... how many actually have a Hoover as their vacuum cleaner.

Scothgard, Sellotape & Post-it note are all registered trademarks of 3M. However have made it into the everyday language of most people. Thats what you call serious brand awareness.

3M might have gone after BBC Blue Peter for saying Sellotape instead of sticky back plastic. I doubt they'd be interested in a small time cleaner. I use the phrase Scotchgard to alll my customers when talking about protection when I use a different brand. However using it your advertising is taking chances. Doubt he would get as much as a phone call from trading standerds if he was reported.

you can't say you use 'scotchguard' unless you do actually use it,

if you had a decorator in to paint your house and he said he only uses the best Dulux emulsion then you saw his using B&Q own brand would you be annoyed and think you had been lied too, its the same thing.

Scotchgard does not work on leather as it was a product developed to coat the fibres of a fabric.

A good leather protector works in the same way as a scotchgard but should only be used as an analogy.

I know lots of carpet cleaners saying they scotchguard, whether they use the original (doubtfull because of cost) is another matter.

Think most people use an after market equivilent costing lots less that aparently does the same thing. Think it does if used correctly.

All the best,
Jason.

I can remember that Derek said that it had been redeveloped for teh European market but I've seen Scotchgard leather protection cream but it was some time ago.

I think it's a bit strange that no one mentions the fact he's only charging £49, the ad must have cost him £200 so he's got 4 suites to clean, condition & 'scotchguard' before he makes a profit...idiot

On pigmented leather, anything that suspends liquids or protects the surface will only last a matter of weeks/months and needs regular application.

Not true Paul.  There are tested products that have a life span of about 2 years.  Again just a sales pitch to sell more product.
