Has anyone ever rented temporary traffic lights or know how they work?

I am looking to use them for a job which is on an urban dual carriageway.

I am thinking to restrict the traffic to one lane and then use the lights to stop the traffic. Then I can duck into the lane we have closed, my colleague will change the lights to green. Then when the cars have passed, he will change them back to red and I will step out into the road again.

Will this work? Any better ideas?

You`ll need to ring the council for certain,due to H&S they will help you and in some cases will close roads.

cant you just get one of those lollypop boards with stop and go on it . i dont no proper name but i would think youve seen them someone just stands with it then turns it when needed .

I have ruled out closing the road as the red tape involved is, frankly, ridiculous. Six weeks of consultations, planning meetings, public notices, advertising in the local paper, putting out signs 4 weeks ahead to warn people  : etc etc etc

DO you need a permit for the temporary traffic lights?

I have seen the gas people using them all the time. Can't imagine they have to get a permit for 20 sites per day?

The lollipop idea migth have been good, but have been advised that people often drive through them by accident whereas people take notice of a red light

The only tip I can give you regarding temporary traffic lights, is when you hand them back, try to beg,steal,or borrow the rubber mat that runs across the road to protect the cable? There ideal for putting your hose in if you have to run your hose across the road.

Using temporary traffic lights requires a licence and you wont get one of those without having attended a course on how to use them, I went on one years ago, it was about £350.00 for a 2 day course.

YOU DO NOT JUST HAVE TO PLUG THEM INTO A GENNY!!!

Would be worth it though. This job is every 2 months and we might be getting more work like this.

Your right there, but if its permission from the council thats 6 months away

ive also used lights to control traffic for a building job

the council get involved and its also a pain

you best bet, and how i would do it, use your van as i "block " and put the hazzards on and slowley walk in front of the van whilst cleaning

put a few cones or warning triangles out in front, so cars have plenty of warning

its not ideal, but you wil get the job done without the council involved
