Computer Virus Help
« on: November 26, 2004, 08:20:24 pm »
My computer seems to have a virus.

When I go on the net it takes me to a home page (search engine) that I dont want.  If I change this in 'tools' the virus overrides it when I turn the computer off.

I've done a Norton virus check and it flags two problem files.  When I click on the virus to see how to kill it the computer takes me to this unwanted search page.  When I click on the option in Norton for the online virus encyclopedia again the computer takes me to this search engine.

Any ideas?

thanks
Mark

Now it seems to me like you need to update your norton application by using "liveupdate"  in norton tools.
It may be that you are missing the latest virus definitions on your computer.
I hope this helps, I however use Apple Macs. they do not suffer this common problem.

If you have no joy which has been recommended, a reformat may be needed don’t forget to back up data.

CWShreder or CWS hijacker should remove a hijacked home page.
I have this on my protection programes, including Spybot and Adware Personal, including Norton antivirus.

All these are free except Norton Antivirus which must be paid for anually as any good protection program.

A good firewall is free from Zone Alarm but can be switched off as some times a pain in the nether regions  ;D

Hi

Mark, I've had exactly the same thing, trying to open something called globalexpress, and then windows shutting itself down to protect itself.

I went to www.download.com and put in spyware as a search. I downloaded spydoctor. Keep you posted.

Hi Mark,

Can you tell me the address of where it takes you.
And have you got any new desktop icons?
Prob not hard to get rid of but you could be on a time limit where any number of things could happen...

Hi Guys

The spyware doctor I downloaded last night is an excellent program.

found 603 infections last night and has just found another 195 infections this morning. It also tells you exactly what they are and what they do. This includes dialers, pop-ups, toolbars, porn. I am finding it amazing what is downloading itself with my knowing

Go to www.download.com and put it spyware as a search and it should be the 1st choice.

hi mark

had this problem a while ago, did not need anything fancy to fix it. go to "computer active " web site and on there you will find a little program called "start page guard" it does exactly what it says, stops anything from hi jacking and redirecting your opening browser page. its free, it is not spyware, and it is clean because it comes from a reputable source.

hope this helps, i've been using it for months now and had no problems with it

cheers

TOP TIP:
PC filled with adware and viruses? No idea how
to rescue it from malware-doom? Don't bother
with all that Ad-Aware and Spybot crap, just
pour a cup of tea in it and do an insurance job.

Hmmm...

Spend 5 minutes downloading some protection or...

Destroy £3000 worth of equipment, maybe don't get paid out for it, spend a few months offline...

Hmmm... desicions, desicions...
