Van Recommendations
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:45:13 pm »
Hi,

I am looking at getting another van and was wondering what you are using and if you have had any problems with it or not.

I was looking at getting a med wheel med roof transit but delivery time was 3-5 months as ford were unable to predict demand this year! So I am looking for something of similar size............and hoping that they have a quicker lead time.

thanks for your opinions, ben

Unless you can buy off the forecourt the better vans will probably have a simular waiting time, my mate in Lancashire had to wait simular to get a Citreon, don't get fooled into buying what you don't want!

Toyota are also doing some good deals at my local dealership perhaps at your also.

we also have the lwb vivaro and have been well pleased with it, plenty of room, have a tm, porty , reels and tools and still room for rugs. nice cab and 6 speed box, like a car to drive and handles well even with full tanks of water.

Nissan Vanette Cargo, left and right side doors.

Not recommended for long journeys though but great around the town and villages.

What MPG are you gettin on the Vivaro with a TM and all the bits.

I get 20mpg from a LWB Transit 2001 model and it breaks my heart.

We use Volkswagen Transporter Vans, we made the mistake of buying a Vivaro in 2003 brand new, as soon as it was out of warranty we had a whole list of problems, including:

New Gear Box
Ignition
Engine management system

When they get to three - four years old, thats when the trouble starts,I have three friends living in this area that have had exactly the same trouble.

They do drive well, and look good, but I will never buy any van other than VW.

Gear box trouble. thats nothing new Spencer, same as the old Renault Trafics, It still appears to be  fault with those vans.
Ford Transit's are my choice now and I find them virtually trouble free.
Mark, 20 MPG seems very poor mileage for your van but then I suppose yours is mostly city driving whereas mine would be mainly on country roads.

Hi all,

I'm back with transits. Had a nearly new vivaro, nothing but problems including diesel pump (less than 10k, under waranty thank god) and gearbox overhall at under 60k miles cost over £1k.

Then recently had a movano where big ends went under 2,000 miles of major service including cambelts changed at 107k. Engine write off, had to change van because of expense hence trusty transit.

Had a ford transit years ago for market work, never let me down even when carrying LOTS of weight even compared with now (truckmount/water tanks/hose reels/chems/etc.)

Forget your vauxhalls, renaults, citroens and many other foreign motors. Stick with ford, you cant go far wrong!

All the best,
Jason.

hi there

watch out for the insurance with Transits, as they are very popular with the travelling community, and some fleet insurance companies wont even insure them.

we contract hire all our vehicles, so they are always in the warranty, and therefore we dont get caught with any of those issues.

we have had four new shape transits and there poop ive just traded the last one in it was a 56reg high cube 140 bhp with all the bits on it because ford had it more then us ,  took them six weeks to get and fit a rear axle !!!  ;D there a joke but then again nobody on here will do any real miles in there vans so you should get three years out of them befour you have to dig deep

hi there,

what is your definition of real miles,

all of our vehicles over the past three years have done 24000 miles per year minimum, and some 30,000 miles.

i think that is a decent enough amount.
