just had my first leather enquiry which came from spick and  span website, a 3 piece and a 2 piece beige pigmented  custy paid 4 grand for it 6 years ago she has been cleaning it with baby wipes for most of that time, there is also a bit of dye tranfer on the cushions and she also describes like small cracks on the custions. Common sence tells me not to touch it with a barge pole.but on the other hand you don't get medals for sitting in trenches , I have done the ltt course but I have never done any restoration work.

Any advice appreciated

Hi John

If the customer has been using baby wipes then there will be damage to the finish which will need addressing.  This may have caused the cracking.

You need to go out and have a look at this and assess whether it is a cleaning job or a restoration job (experience wil only come from looking at work like this) If it is more restoration than cleaning then you need to say you do not cover this work and hand it on to someone who can safely tackle it.

This type of work was covered on our Day 4 which you missed.

This is an expensive suite so will be worth restoring. 

Customer also needs advising on how to look after it correctly!!!

Yeah John,  Where were you.   I must say the repairs that I saw of a cracked leather suite was well impressive.  However I would certainly avoid lookign at just a simple clean.

My suote was exactly as you described and as soon as I cleaned it with proper products then all the pigment satarted to peel off.  WE had used baby wipes long before I new what damage they caused.

Defo a restoration job.

Hi all , went to survey the suite yesterday it was't as bad as the customer explained it to me on the phone it was just very dirty with a small amount of cracking of the top coat in a few areas , the nose of one of the seats and the pigment has been rubbed of on the corners of the back.
My advice to anybody wanting  to get into leather is to get some proper training , what we learned on Friday with Paul was not to worry to much everything is reversible  . any way quoted £160 subject to pre clean and got the job

Do you really not get many enquries for leather cleaning ? I would say I get almost as many leather suites to clean nowadays as fabric and they are much quicker / easier to clean.

Re fabric v leather suite cleaning, I probably get 5 to 2 ratio in favour of fabric.

Personally prefer to clean leather.

Last time was about three years ago, though I do advertise it. All training is good that’s why I went on a refresher course hard floor too there surprise. Niche market I suppose, of which I don’t advertise for.
